Maintenance Fee FAQs

What is the GCash maintenance fee?

The GCash maintenance fee is a new rule by G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), wherein GCash wallets that have no GCash transactions (or what we also call "dormant") will be charged P50.

GCash will give customers a 6-month window to transact with their GCash in order to give them enough time to transact before being tagged as dormant.

How much is the GCash maintenance fee?

A P50 GCash maintenance fee will be charged every month for accounts that are inactive for 6 months or longer. Keep your account active by buying load, paying bills, using GCash MasterCard or GCash American Express® Virtual Pay, making web payments, sending money, donating, cashing-in/out, making mobile banking transactions or withdrawing via ATM.

Is this sanctioned by the BSP?

Yes. The Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is aware of this fee.

Why is it being implemented?

This rule is being implemented in order to cover the maintenance costs of storing GCash funds of dormant GCash wallets as brought about by G-Xchange, Inc. (GCash)'s e-money license. This is similar to banks that deduct funds from accounts that have no activity.

I understand now. But can you tell me what the G-Xchange, Inc. (GCash)'s e-money license is?

Sure! The e-money license is a license issued by the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas that gives G-Xchange, Inc. (GCash) the right to operate an e-money service (GCash).

How is a GCash wallet tagged as dormant/ inactive?

A GCash wallet is tagged as a candidate for dormancy at 11:59PM on the last day of the month that it has been inactive for 6 months. On the first day of the following month, you shall receive a text notifying that you are a candidate for dormancy, and must transact before 11:59PM on the 9th day of that month.

If you have not transacted by then, you're given dormancy status. You shall be charged the GCash maintenance fee of P50 on the 10th day of that month.

For example:

A wallet's last transaction was June 23, 2015. On December 23, 2015, it will be inactive for 6 months. It will be tagged as candidate for dormancy 11:59PM, December 31, 2015. On January 1, 2016, you shall receive a message that you must transact on or before 11:59PM of January 9, 2016.

If you do not transact by then, you shall be tagged as dormant at 12:00AM of January 10 and shall be charged the GCash maintenance fee on the same day. If you transact before 11:59PM of January 9, you shall be tagged as active, and will not be a candidate for dormancy for the next 6 months.

A wallet is considered dormant unless it transacts ANY of the following activities:

  • Buy Load
  • Pay Bills
  • Use GCash MasterCard
  • Use GCash American Express® Virtual Pay
  • Make Web Payments
  • Send Money
  • Cash-in
  • Cash-out
  • Make Mobile Banking Transactions
  • Withdraw via ATM
  • Donate

This is regardless of the channel by which these services were accessed (*143#, GCash Mobile App, SMS Syntax, SIM Menu)

When do you charge the GCash maintenance fee?

The GCash maintenance fee is charged every 10th day of the month, every month after a wallet has been tagged and remains dormant. For example, a wallet is tagged as dormant on 11:59PM, January 9, 2016, then it shall be charged the GCash maintenance fee on January 10, 2016.

I wasn't charged of the GCash maintenance fee since I have no balance left in my GCash wallet. Will there be any penalty for not paying the GCash maintenance fee?

None. There is no penalty if you have no balance left in your GCash wallet.

Will I receive a message telling me that I may be charged a GCash maintenance fee/ candidate for dormancy?

Yes, you shall receive a message that reads like this:

"GCash Reminder: Keep your GCash account active by doing any GCash transaction on or before 9. If no GCash transaction is made before this date, P50 maintenance fee will be charged on 10. This amount will be deducted from your GCash wallet. To use GCash, just dial *143# to access the GCash menu. Forgot your GCash MPIN? Email [email protected] For info, visit www.globe.com.ph/gcash."

Will I still receive the said SMS even if I have no amount left in my GCash wallet?

No. If you don't have any balance in your GCash wallet, you will not receive the SMS informing you of the GCash maintenance fee.

How will I know if I have been charged a GCash maintenance fee? Will I get a message too?

Yes, you will receive a message notifying that you have been charged the Inactive GCash maintenance fee. The message will read like this:

"PXX GCash maintenance fee was deducted from your GCash wallet on mm-dd-yy hh:mm:ss AM/PM. Reference no. XXXXXXX. No maintenance fee will be charged in the succeeding months if you do at least one GCash transaction until 9. To use GCash, just dial *143# and choose GCash. Forgot your GCash MPIN? Email [email protected] For info, visit www.globe.com.ph/gcash."

What happens if my GCash wallet has less than P50 when the GCash maintenance fee is charged?

You will only be charged the remaining amount in your GCash wallet. Say for example, you only have P35 in your wallet, and it has been tagged as dormant, on the 10th day of the following month, you will only be charged P35. Then you shall not be charged any more.

I see. How about if my GCash wallet has zero balance when the fee is charged? What will happen?

If that's the case, you will not be charged any GCash maintenance fee. So if you have Php 0 in your wallet, and it has been tagged as dormant, you won't be charged any fee. However, your GCash account will be deactivated. To apply again, simply dial *143#, select GCash and Register.

What transactions can I do to lift the dormancy status of my wallet?

You may do any of the following GCash transactions:

  • Buy Load
  • Pay Bills
  • Use GCash MasterCard
  • Use GCash American Express® Virtual Pay
  • Make Web Payments
  • Send Money
  • Cash-in
  • Cash-out
  • Make Mobile Banking Transactions
  • Withdraw via ATM
  • Donate
Until when will I be charged of the GCash maintenance fee?

So long as you don't do any GCash transactions, you will be charged P50 every month. We will continue to incur monthly charges until your wallet has no remaining balance.

This is being done monthly, so as to give you a chance to transact. This cannot be done one-time, because some customers that have been tagged as dormant may have large amounts in their GCash wallets, and will not be fair if they are charged the full amount whereas other customers are charged much smaller fees depending on the balance in their GCash wallets.

I have a friend who doesn't have any GCash balance and was not charged the monthly maintenance fee. How come I am being charged because of having a balance in my GCash wallet?

That's because customers with no wallet balance do not cause G-Xchange, Inc. (GCash) to incur any additional expenses as a result of maintaining the e-money license. Therefore these customers are not charged any fee.

Will my GCash account be deactivated for not having any GCash balance and transaction for more than 6 months?

Yes, your GCash account will be deactivated. To apply again, simply dial *143#, select GCash and Register.

What happens if I Cash-in to my wallet after several months of being dormant with zero GCash balance? Will I be charged for the months that I was dormant and had zero balance?

No, you will not be charged. Once you cash-in an amount to your GCash wallet, you will no longer have a dormancy status.
