Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical Call for Auditions for the Hit Disney Musical Newsies
Today’s your chance to seize the day! After mounting the critically and commercially successful holiday musical A Christmas Carol and American Idiot, Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical are calling for auditions for its next musical offering and Tony Awards winning play, Newsies.
“We’re still on a high after closing the year with A Christmas Carol. The highly-infectious songs are still playing in our heads but we feel it’s time to start preparing for our next production,” says Executive Producer and Globe Retail Transformation and Stores Management Advisor Joe Caliro. “We want to continue our musical streak with the Disney film turned Broadway classic Newsies.”
Newsies is loosely based on the newsboys strike in 1899, where a group of boys initiated a strike hoping to improve how child laborers were compensated. The true story was developed into a film by Disney and directed by Kenny Ortega in 1992. It went on to become a cult classic when it was released on home video.
In 2011, the film was adapted into a Broadway musical, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein. It was also starring Jeremy Jordan, the Hollywood actor playing leading roles in hit TV shows Smash and Supergirl. Originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies later won Best Choreography and Best Original Score.
Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical are looking for actors with star quality who can either sing, act, or dance through an online audition running from February 15 to 25 for mostly males aged 15 years old and above.
To audition, dancers can record a one to a minute and a half video dancing to jazz, ballet, gymnastics, hip-hop, tap, and other dance techniques; Singers can record a one to one and a half minute video of doing a cover song of their choice, and; those who can both sing and dance can extend their audition video to two to three minutes long showing both talents. If auditionees think they’re not exceptional at dancing or singing but have great potential, they should not fret as there will be a training period of four months for them as long as they get through the audition screening.
Aspiring actors can submit their audition videos through YouTube or email by following these mechanics:
- Upload the audition video on YouTube with the title “Cast [full name] for #GlobeLive9WTNewsies!” Then tweet it as entry using the YouTube link with "#GlobeLive9WTNewsies" and "#SeizeTheDay" and tag @enjoyglobe. The tweet must be open to the public.
- Email the video to [email protected] and [email protected] with the subject “#GlobeLive9WTNewsies #SeizeTheDay Audition Video - [name]”
The producers will get in touch with the auditionees via Twitter or email to get the consent for uploading in Globe and 9Works Theatrical’s digital platforms. The minimum video resolution is 720p. The audition callbacks will be on February 27 to 28 and March 5, 2017. The Submission of entries is also extended until March 3.
“We’ve worked with amazing actors in our runs of American Idiot and A Christmas Carol. We’re looking forward to working with more of them for Newsies,” ends Caliro.
Disney’s Newsies will be staged starting in July at the Globe Iconic Store in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
