Globe Prepaid Mobile Data Competitively Priced Against Other Countries in APAC

With demand-driven by digital lifestyle, video streaming, mobile gaming and the need to be connected with the rest of the world, the Philippines remains data price-friendly especially in the prepaid segment where an overwhelming majority of the population are subscribed to.

Comparing with other countries in the region, the mobile internet price per gigabyte (GB) of Globe Prepaid registered as one of the lowest in Southeast Asia and selected Asia Pacific countries including China and India.

The mobile internet price per GB of Globe is *$0.43 (P22.50) which is way below Singapore's $3.20 (P168.42), Thailand's $1.84 (P96.84) or even China's average rate of $1.31 (P68.95) per GB.

Globe Prepaid mobile internet price/GB is also lower compared to Malaysia ($0.53 or P28.07) and Indonesia ($1.33 or P70.00). Overall, the Philippines is second only to India, which has $0.23 or P12.04. At present, India offers the cheapest rate in the region.

In the first half of 2019, Globe saw its mobile data traffic almost double, with a 96% increase to 764 petabytes this year from 390 petabytes in the same period of 2018. The sustained increase in data usage was boosted by Globe's attractive data plans and promos, and the general public's rising clamor for data-intensive activities such as online gaming, streaming, and on-demand video content.

“With our customers' surging demand for mobile data consumption, providing more economical data promos is more important than ever. We will continue to ramp up our network rollout, build more cell towers, and create more cost-effective promos to give our customers the best possible quality of experience,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.

Mobile data remains the top contributor to Globe's mobile business, accounting for 62% (P34.0 billion) of the total mobile revenues and surpassing its 48% share from a year ago. For the first six months of the year, mobile revenues stood at P54.6 billion, surpassing the P49 billion posted in the same period of 2018 and 2% higher than the previous quarter.

Cu said that almost all Globe Prepaid users in the Philippines are subscribed to promo making data price affordable and beneficial to the consumers. “Our GoSakto90 Prepaid promo, for instance, has free 2 GB of data and an additional 2 GB dedicated to video streaming app or mobile games of choice,” Cu said.

Globe's wide portfolio of value-for-money promos for surfing, video streaming, and mobile gaming—in partnership with local and international content providers—has led to this surge in consumer spending on mobile data, especially in the prepaid segment.

The Philippines has 76 million internet users and 71.4 million use the mobile phone to access the internet where the majority are using mobile prepaid services according to Digital 2019: Philippines by We Are Social.
