Eala’s Stellar Run in France Ends in Quarterfinals

Filipina tennis sensation and Globe Ambassador Alex Eala saw her incredible run in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W25 Grenoble halted in the quarterfinals after she was beaten by Polish netter, Maja Chwalinska, in straight sets, 0-6, 4-6, on Friday in France.

The 15-year old got off to a slow start as she could not get anything going against the 19-year old Chwalinska, who is ranked 220th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings. Eala double-faulted three times in the first set, twice in the first game alone as Chwalinska grabbed the first set in convincing fashion.

The second set saw Eala put up an incredible fight as she broke Chwalinska’s serve to surge ahead, 4-3. However, that would prove to be her last hurrah as Chwalinska rattled off three straight points to take the set and nab the win in just one hour and 16 minutes.

In spite of the loss, Eala is expected to gain some more points and move further up in the standings, thanks to great performances this week which included a three-set thriller over Romanian netter Laura-Ioana Paar and another three-set victory over the tournament’s seventh-seed, Cristina Bucsa.

It was also Eala's third straight pro quarterfinals appearance after winning her maiden title early in January in Spain.
