Globe Telecom Boosts Network Coverage in Hilly Barangays of Cebu
Residents of Brgys. Bonbon and Guba in Cebu City will soon experience improved mobile network coverage after Globe Telecom put up additional cell sites to address dead spots in the mountain areas.
Aside from the two cell sites Globe deployed in Brgys. Bonbon and Guba, the company targets to put up more towers in Brgys. Tabunan, Sirao, and Babag, connecting thousands of households to the rest of the world.
“This is part of our vision to provide each and every Filipino access to critical telecommunications services, especially those who live in underserved, sparsely populated areas, as they need connectivity the most,” said Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo, thanking the Cebu City Government, headed by Mayor Tomas “Tommy” Osmeña, for the speedy permitting process.
Located on the hilly lands of Cebu, Brgys. Bonbon and Guba are about an hour ride from the central business district. Heading to the uphill barangays means passing through steep, rough roads, making it virtually accessible in inclement weather. This situation motivated Globe to put up a cell site in each of the barangay, helping communities stay connected especially in times of disasters and calamities.
The company’s cell site deployment in uphill Cebu is part of its massive network modernization program geared to fortify the reach, resilience, and reliability of Globe network. Globe continues to invest heavily to modernize and upgrade its network, spending about 32% of its topline revenues a year. This is one of the highest reinvestment ratios among telcos in the world. As of end-September 2018, the company has deployed close to 12,000 LTE sites by fully utilizing 700 MHz, 2600 MHz, and other spectrum assets. This makes its LTE coverage present in about 90% of cities and municipalities across the Philippines.
