Globe Telecom is set to put up a cell site inside the University of Mindanao Matina Campus in Davao City to enable students, teachers, and the school administration to fully embrace digitalization through enhanced mobile voice and data connectivity.
Once in place, the cell site will not only serve the over 21,000 student population of the campus but will also benefit the communities surrounding the university, including businesses in the area.
“Everything is turning digital, and the university is preparing for this new industrial revolution which entails a lot of digital and artificial intelligence which also needs a lot of signal using the internet. We hope Globe services will, in turn, make ours faster,” said Dr. Guillermo P. Torres, Jr., UM President and CEO.
To this, Ric Aquino, Head, Globe myBusiness Regional Sales - South Mindanao said: “The initiative is not merely to improve text, internet, and call services but serves as a way to empower Filipino students with world-class learning using technology.”
The commitment was formalized through a cell site groundbreaking ceremony attended by UM officials led by Torres; Edgardo O. Castillo, Chief Information Officer; and Paolo D. Torres, Compliance Officer.

Globe and UM have a long-standing partnership that started with the launch of GoWiFi and the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) in four UM campuses in Bolton and Matina in Davao City, Tagum in Davao del Norte, and Digos in Davao del Sur.
GoWiFi provides free internet access for 30 minutes to students, enabling them to stay connected anywhere on the campus. GoWiFi is a public WiFi hotspot service of Globe which supports national development by providing easy to use and cost-effective internet connectivity to multiple users. It is currently available in over 2,700 establishments nationwide and open to all networks.
On the other hand, DTP is an advocacy and training program created to help schools understand the importance of online security and business models and the impact of being digitally connected.
DTP includes modules conceptualized and designed to increase students’ knowledge of digital citizenship and cyber safety, which involves taking a careful and critical look at kids’ online behavior and helping them develop insights on how the online world can influence them in making choices.
