Hosted by first-timer Seth Meyers, the late night show host and comedian didn’t waste any time and cut right to it taking jabs at the current flaws in the system. His opening monologue below targeted sexual predators in the industry, the prevalent racism and sexism among other things.

Leading up to this big night, however, it was the Time’s Up initiative that truly set the tone. Because of this, the Golden Globes became more than just trophies, haute couture, glitz and glamour. It became the figurative stage upon which an entire movement could have the spotlight all to itself. With the famous women of Hollywood—allies—up in arms, those silenced by sexual harassment were empowered to get their voices back and encouraged to use them to speak on issues now more than ever and louder than ever.

The #TIMESUP movement encourages women everywhere to know their rights, enlightens them about how to spot sexual harassment and let’s them know what they can do should it happen to them. This is precisely the reason the red carpet coverage, award show in-betweens and behind-the-scenes moments prove to be even more interesting than the awards show program itself. The Ooh’s

As a sign of protest, attendees wore black to the event. And these ladies were a vision.

Dakota Johnson’s surprising number by Gucci had fashion critics talking. What critics thought was a safe, old Hollywood glamour look apparently had all the drama in the back.

Debra Messing called out this network while being interviewed on that same network and it was brilliant.

 As Twitter user @kaneandgriffin puts it: “This is what using your privilege looks like.”

The internet had a field day over these Game of Thrones reunion photos.

And there was something for Harry Potter fans as well.

During the latter part of Seth Meyer’s opening monologue, comedienne Amy Poehler showed us all a little sass.

The Shape of Water, which bagged seven nominations in early December, took home two awards.

Awards went out to Alexandre Desplat for Best Original Score and Guillermo del Toro for Best Director.

But that wasn’t before Natalie Portman threw shade while introducing the nominees and winner for the Best Director category.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the night’s big winner.

The film written and directed by Martin McDonagh took home the award for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Screenplay. Frances McDormand, meanwhile, won Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) and Sam Rockwell won Best Supporting Actor.

As the show went on, so did the internet: Views were divided on the black dress code. Is it really a meaningful form of protest? Each side makes valid points.

The Huh’s

Several celebrities rode on the coattails of the #TIMESUP movement, but weren’t quite walking their talk.

Case in point: Paris Hilton. Luckily, the internet never forgets.

Here’s the complete passage from the Marie Claire interview shared by Twitter user @pcd2009: Hilton dismisses the infamous “grab them by the pussy” line. “I've heard guys say the craziest things ever, because I'm always around guys, and I listen to them speak,” she says. As for the women who allege that Trump sexually assaulted them, “I think that they are just trying to get attention and get fame,” she shrugs, staring out the window.

And then there’s Justin Timberlake…

Timberlake starred in the 2017 drama Wonder Wheel, which was written and directed by accused child molester Woody Allen.

There was also Kendall Jenner’s very random appearance.

Now that mini Moët & Chandon’s no can of Pepsi, but we suppose this is still in keeping with Kendall Jenner’s brand of activism…

Even The New York Times couldn’t help but throw shade.

As a black tie event, pretty much every man at the Globes was, by default, in protest attire, which means red carpet interviews were key for these fellow feminists and allies of women.

However, interviews conducted by Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic were neither here nor there. They still merit points, we suppose, for doing away away with the overused “who are you wearing?” opener.

This edition of the Golden Globes was the first time Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie were in the same venue together.

First They Killed My Father, the biographical drama directed by Angelina Jolie, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie is available for streaming on Neflix.

The Aww’s

Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus made their relationship red-carpet official.

In 2016, Diane Kruger ended her decade-long relationship with Fringe and Dawson’s Creek actor Joshua Jackson. She was spotted in early 2017 with The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus but didn’t confirm the status of their relationship then.

Stolen shots of everybody’s favorite gentleman Tom Hanks who got other people their drinks began making rounds online.

Master of None’s Aziz Ansari won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy TV Series and was a complete charmer.

The Aah’s

Kerry Washington defends the women’s decision to attend the event instead of boycott as a sign of protest.

In her interview with NBC, she said: “we shouldn’t have to give up our seats at the table because of bad behavior that wasn’t ours.”

The Time’s Up initiative has already raised over $16 million.

“The sexual discrimination, harassment, and assault that has been reported and come to light over the last two months have been equal parts terrifying and illuminating. We stand with all those who have endured sexual harassment: those who have come forward and those who have decided to remain quiet. Showing that women in Hollywood aren’t living in a bubble, Emma Watson showed up with someone very near and dear to her heart as her date for the evening.

She brought along Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan, a women’s organization “dedicated to addressing violence against women.” The two women used the event to advocate for their causes.

And Watson wasn’t the only one who brought an activist for a date.

Michelle Williams’ date for the night was Tarana Burke, the woman behind the #metoo movement. Meryl Streep’s was National Domestic Workers Alliance Director Ai-jen Poo. Emma Stone, meanwhile, brought tennis superstar Billie Jean King, who founded the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s Tennis Association.

The internet celebrated the return of Laura Dern.

Dern won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Renata Klein in Little Big Lies. “Many of us were taught not to tattle. It was a culture of silencing and that was normalized,” she said in her speech. “I urge all of us to not only support survivors and bystanders who are brave enough to tell their truth, but to promote restorative justice.” Listen to her full acceptance speech below:

Oprah Winfrey is this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. de Mille Award.

And with that, the hope is that woke Hollywood continues on as a catalyst for true change and that this is the start of a revolution for women everywhere.
