5 Albums We Can’t Wait to Stream: May 2021
New month, new releases!
Compared to previous months, May is looking extra jam-packed. It seems every week comes with a new album (either by an industry heavy-hitter, a returning favorite or a hot new artist). Notably, May is the month for the likes of Mitski, Angel Olsen, Weezer, Sufjan Stevens, Dayglow and Sinead Harnett—all slated to drop new albums this month.
With that, we round up five other album releases we’re extra excited for in May. Scroll through and stay tuned, too.
"'a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet gets you out and then into the sun...'" by Aly & AJ
The sisters are back. Since the release of their last studio album Insomniatic in 2007, the pop duo has done their fair share of growing up, exploring beyond music and soul searching. Aly and AJ are set to return this month with a 12-track project that recaps that journey.
“What I love about this record is that we don’t just touch on the typical makeup/breakup situations,” AJ shared with americansongwriter.com. “For Aly and I, it’s all about everyday life and diving into mental health awareness, abuse and what it feels like to want to escape or get out of a relationship that you can’t leave or just pack up your bags and head to a different town.”
Stream a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet gets you out and then into the sun when it drops on May 7.
"Daddy’s Home" by St. Vincent
Annie Clark and highly-acclaimed producer Jack Antonoff team up to usher in a new era for St. Vincent. As evidenced by the American singer’s lead single Pay Your Way in Pain, the forthcoming LP is a nod to the ‘70s groove, peppered with upbeat tracks to stream (and dance to!) during quarantine.
Still, it shouldn’t escape fans that there’s an underlying autobiographical element to the project. “I always think of the Picasso quote: ‘Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth,’” she said in an interview with NME. “These stories are things that I’ve lived and ways that I feel. It’s hard for me to parcel out what is what. I just make the world. I don’t think too much about compartmentalizing it.”
Daddy’s Home is available for streaming on May 14th.
"Delta Kream" by The Black Keys
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys are keeping the new music coming. Hot on the heels of their ninth studio album Let's Rock, they’re hitting a new milestone with the folk rock-meets-blues Delta Kream.
“This is basically folk music on a certain level, and a lot of this music is like hand-me-downs from generation to generation,” Auerbach told Rolling Stone. “I’m singing lyrics that are like third-generation wrong lyrics. I’m singing a certain version that Junior recorded where maybe he messed up a line, but that’s the only one I know. So we were really just kind of flying by the seat of our pants.”
Stream Delta Kream beginning May. 14.
"SOUR" by Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia Rodrigo is one of the fastest rising artists in 2021, and things are about to get even bigger for the Filipino-American singer. Her debut studio album SOUR drops soon, featuring 11 tracks, including her instant hit singles drivers license and déjà vu.
What should fans expect? According to Rodrigo, they’re in for something that’s “sort of all over the place” but in the best way possible. “There [are] so many different types of songs and different textures,” she said in an interview. “We worked really hard to make it super diverse.”
SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo is out May 21st.
"When Smoke Rises" by Mustafa
Muslim singer-songwriter and spoken word artist Mustafa, also known as Mustafa the Poet, is another young artist coming out with a debut record this month. When Smoke Rises is something to watch out for: a genre-bending album that acts as a window to his experiences growing up in Regent Park.
“One of the worst, most poisonous things about living in a community where death is prevalent is the grieving hierarchy,” he told Pitchfork. “Who gets to grieve? What are the time restraints on mourning? At what capacity do they get to mourn? What was their relationship? Was it of any importance?”
Listen to Mustafa’s gripping debut album when it drops on May 28.
