“Ang Fraile” Is Your New Favorite Historical Series

Get behind this new period comedy!

There’s no denying that we love a good historical film or series. These offer us a much-needed retrospective, possibly even a new way to view our collective past and see how we can learn from them. But usually, history is approached with a lot of seriousness. We’ve seen it with the dramatics of The Crown and Judas and The Black Messiah that are all tension and suspense as its creators tread those historical matters carefully. The last thing that they’d want to do is to offend people with their work.

However, modern creators also like mixing in some comedy to lighten the mood. After all, history can be funny, too. We’ve seen it with a well-timed punchline in Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. Puns, jokes and punchlines break the stifling air surrounding the wars they tackle. And even then, they manage to carry and deliver the message of nationalism. But what happens when we take it a notch higher and bring the social commentary through satire? 

Look no further because one of the newest period comedies-slash-satires is from Globe Studios’ anticipated series: Ang Fraile. It’s the brainchild of producer Erwin Romulo and director RA Rivera, a project that’s five years in the making. According to Globe Studios’ head Quark Henares, “The combination of both talents is fully showcased here, with its stellar cast, period setting, irreverent humor and social commentary.”

Ang Fraile features a star-studded cast, with Cherie Gil, Joel Torre, John Lloyd Cruz and more. A ruthless friar, played by Jun Sabayton, rules over the town. However, an indio, played by John Lloyd Cruz, notices that there’s something wrong with how the friar and the rich ones treat them. What happens when the ugliest of all indios starts to ask questions? Perhaps the Philippine Revolution might not be far behind.
