Song Lyrics from Sweetener That Prove Ariana Grande’s All Grown Up

The new era of Ariana Grande is here: she’s unapologetic and self-aware, a fully-realized artist

“She has such an extraordinary voice and it’s time for her to sing the songs that define her,” shared Ariana Grande’s talent manager Scooter Braun. This was in November; word on the street was that Grande was in the process of wrapping up her fourth studio album, the title still unknown. He added: “Whitney, Mariah, Adele…when they sing, that’s their song. Ariana has big vocal moments; it’s time for her song.”

Cut to: August 19 of this year. After the release of her highly-anticipated album entitled Sweetener, now known and streamed by millions all over the world, the 25-year-old popstar has once again proven her vocal prowess, that she’s a force to be reckoned with and she’s ready for total domination.

On the Sweetener promotion trail, Grande makes a stop at Apple Music. “Are you going to hyphenate your last name? Are you going to be, like, Ariana Grande-Davidson?” asks Beats 1 host Ebro Darden, who chats with her about her love life and career, both that have changed drastically in such a short amount of time (read: she gets engaged to actor/comedian Pete Davidson after one month of dating).

“I feel like I’d like to eventually just be called Ariana,” quipped Grande. Like the legends that came before her, she’s well on her way to earning that mononymous title, a single-word name that solidifies her place in the industry. The latest addition to Grande’s storied list of accomplishments that underline her status as an icon? She’s the pint-sized songstress with a rare four-octave vocal range, who single-handedly saved pop music in 2018.

Sweetener, the 15-track album that’s catchy as it is uplifting, is a reflection of an Ariana Grande who’s full-grown. Here, a sound her fans has never heard before, a side of her they haven’t seen until now and a message the world needs to hear.

“everytime”

On vulnerability and the tiresome emotional push and pull of a toxic relationship that should have ended a long time ago.

You get high and call on the regular
I get weak and fall like a teenager
Why, oh why does God keep bringing me back to you?
I get drunk, pretend that I'm over it
Self-destruct, show up like an idiot
Why, oh why does God keep bringing me back to you?

“better off”

On the numbing emotional absence in, again, a toxic relationship.

And if we're being honest
I'd rather your body than half of your heart
Or jealous-ridden comments
That come when you let in them feelings that I don't want

“get well soon”

On anxiety and “all the voices in [her] head talking to one another.”

They say my system is overloaded
I’m too much in my head, did you notice?
My body’s here on Earth, but I'm floating
Disconnected, so sometimes, I feel frozen and alone

“God is a woman”

On claiming your truth and independence.

And I can be all the things you told me not to be
When you try to come for me, I keep on flourishing

“breathin"

On dealing with anxiety and PTSD.

Feel my blood runnin’, swear the sky’s fallin’
How do I know if all this shit’s fabricated?
Time goes by and I can’t control my mind
Don’t know what else to try, but you tell me every time
Just keep breathin’
