The Best Of David Bowie, Who Would Have Been 71 Today

In celebration of one of music’s most talented and unforgettable voices

It’s easy to get lost in the fast-paced and heart-thumping music of today, especially when the week is done and you just need to let loose. But while songs at the top of the charts are always changing, there is no denying that some musicians come into our lives and never really leave despite the passing of generations and trends.

David Bowie was born in 1947, worked all of his life and gifted us with some of the most mild-boggling music and eye-opening lyrics that the world has to offer. The industry has called him one of its most innovative creators as he redefined reinvention and visual presentation—proven by even just some of his best works.

Space Oddity (1969)

Despite the timing of the song’s release, David Bowie admitted Space Oddity wasn’t written for the Apollo 11 moon landing. It was influenced by the film 2001.

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles

I’m feeling very still and I think my spaceship knows which way to go

Tell my wife I love her very much she knows

Ground Control to Major Tom

Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong

Starman (1972)

World, meet Ziggy Stardust.

There’s a starman waiting in the sky

He’s told us not to blow it

Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile

He told me:

Let the children lose it

Rebel Rebel (1974)

One of Bowie’s most-performed songs.

You’ve got your mother in a whirl cause she’s

Not sure if you’re a boy or a girl

Hey babe, your hair’s alright

Hey babe, let’s stay out tonight

Fame (1975)

His first American Number One single.

Fame, what you like is the limo

Fame, what you get is no tomorrow

Fame, what you need you have to borrow

Fame, it’s mine, it’s mine, it’s just his line

Station To Station (1976)

How does this song still sound futuristic despite the four decades since its debut?

Got to keep searching and searching

Oh, what will I be believing and who will connect me with love?

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful when

Heroes (1977)

It might not have cracked the American Hot 100 upon its release, but its popularity in the 90s proved momentum sometimes takes a while to catch on.

Though nothing will keep us together

We could steal time, just for one day

We can be heroes, for ever and ever

What do you say?

As The World Falls Down (1986)

Anyone remember Jennifer Connelly as Sarah eating an enchanted peach in Labyrinth?

I’ll paint you mornings of gold

I’ll spin you Valentine evenings

Though we’re strangers until now

We’re choosing the path between the stars

I’ll leave my love between the stars

I’m Afraid Of Americans (1995)

With Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor reworking the single version of this song, it instantly became a fan favorite.

Yeah, I’m afraid of Americans

I’m afraid of the world

I’m afraid I can’t help it

I’m afraid I can’t

I’m afraid of Americans

The Next Day (2013)

Controversial? Yes. Amazing? Without a doubt.

First they give you everything you want

Then they take back everything that you have

They live upon their feet and they die upon their knees

They can work with Satan while they dress like the saints

They know God exists for the devil told them so

Lazarus (2016)

A genius until the end.

Look up here, man, I’m in danger

I’ve got nothing left to lose

I’m so high, it makes my brain whirl

Dropped my cell phone down below –

Ain’t that just like me?

Fads come and go, but true musicians stay relevant forever. Here’s to missing you, David Bowie.
