Black Panther Shows A Different Side To Marvel That is Refreshing Yet Challenging
And no, it isn’t just about the cast
When a movie stems away from the normal equation, there is the danger of flopping tremendously. On the other hand, it could be just the thing to change the façade of film as it’s been accepted. Fortunately, Black Panther, even with the added pressure of setting the stage for Infinity War, succeeds in the latter—but it’s not just about the characters.

We cannot ignore the kind of impact that the cast of Black Panther has. Much like Wonder Woman, the film put people that are usually minorities into the limelight and Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Forrest Whitaker and the rest of the talented cast delivered like their lives depended on it. But again: The movie isn’t just about the color of their skin. Black Panther prospers for reasons far beyond this.

It’s taken years and numerous films, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has churned out a movie that feels ripped out of our childhood imaginations and now-dusty comic books. From the first few minutes, the power and technical know-how of Wakanda is clear. Thanks to a surplus of vibranium, the country has flourished unbeknownst to the rest of the world. And King T’Challa needs to decide whether or not his country will continue to develop underground or if it’s right to share their knowledge.
But with some of his countrymen convinced that their wealth should be shared, the newly named Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda must decide whether to follow in the footsteps of the Kings before him or if he should make his own path. He’s torn between respecting his father, defending his country, doing what he knows is right and winning over the woman he loves.
What unfolds is a story that is fast-paced, enchanting and is about so much more than what we’re used to.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’re used to explosions, guns, aliens and a battle between good and evil. With Black Panther, we get a mesmerizing setting, a doubtful king and a battle between what is right and what is wrong. We get a narrative not about power, but of loyalty.
The conflicts are personal, but not selfish. The fights are not about who has the bigger guns or more powerful weapons, but who has the most heart. The resolution doesn’t bring on sighs of relief, but nods of understanding. And you walk out of the cinema knowing you watched a film of MCU-caliber, but knowing deep down that Black Panther is something different.
