The Best Books, Shows, and Songs to Celebrate National Women's Month

This March marks the celebration of National Women’s Month. It’s an important time to recognize the role of females from all walks of life as leaders, movers, disruptors, and sources of inspiration. To jumpstart International Women’s Day, immerse yourself in these books, shows, and songs to fire up your femme power.

Books to Bring Out the Literary Maven Within

Read up on the roots of women who shaped HERstory and be inspired to make yours.

Whether you want to brush up on the early days of feminism or are in the mood for a relatable coming-of-age novel, here are some inspiring stories worth reading, perfect for a bibliophile’s women’s month celebration.

A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf

In 1929, modernist literary figure and novelist Virginia Woolf wrote an essay based on a lecture she gave at Cambridge University. Although narrated by a fictional character, the manuscript and the essay are nonfiction. A Room of One’s Own explores what it means for women to have access to money and education during a time when gender equality wasn’t common. Woolf also describes her creative process, whether in writing or when it came to living life on one’s terms.

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur

A second installment from her first book, Milk and Honey, The Sun and Her Flowers is a delectable collection of poems that grapple with the struggles many women face today. Kaur writes about themes of emotional growth, recovery, and societal pressure as springboards to break away from prejudice, abuse, and underrepresentation. If the line “the irony of loneliness is that we all feel it together at the same time” doesn’t make you feel like raising your fists in solidarity, don’t expect to find better words elsewhere that will.

The Vegetarian by Han Kang

First translated to English from Korean in 2017, The Vegetarian is the first of a three-part series that tells the story of Yeong-hye. After waking up from a violent nightmare that involved animal cruelty, the protagonist promptly decides to turn vegetarian. Despite pressure from her husband, family, and friends to eat meat, she continues to stick to her decision. Choosing to be vegetarian is her way of rebelling against societal expectations and male dominance. As she eats less and continues to get thinner, her decline draws readers down a spiral into madness and a system-shaking transformation of a young woman whose appetite goes beyond physical sustenance.

Darna

What do you get when you combine a mighty extraterrestrial warrior and the traditions of Philippine folklore? Based on Mars Ravelo’s Darna, the 2022 adaptation of the series premiered on Kapamilya Channel’s Primetime Bida evening block. The portrayal of the iconic heroine takes on a modern-day setting as Narda (Jane De Leon), her human persona, defends an ill-struck city using a powerful stone. Embodying female strength and heroism, she fights for justice and protects the innocent. If you’re looking for superhero action this National Women’s Month, let Darna save the (viewing) day.

The Crown

Of course, what’s a Women’s History Month watchlist without women in politics? The Crown is a historical drama series that centers around the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch. During her historic tenure, she modernized the monarchy and championed the transition of the British Empire into a Commonwealth. Besides the critically acclaimed acting, directing, and production value, the honest and lavish retelling of life as a Royal inspires women today to be who they should be—queens.

Boys Wanna Be Her by Peaches

Peaches, the Canadian electroclash musician, released the feminist album Impeach My Bush in 2006. It’s no surprise the song on the album, Boys Wanna Be Her, revels in a girl so glorious that both genders want to be her. Plus, its dancey riffs and mechanized madness make a perfect jam for the dance floor.

Just a Girl by No Doubt

Another songstress sister to invite to your women’s empowerment party is a name that needs no introduction. No Doubt lead vocalist Gwen Stefani was all the rage when she released their hit single, Don't SpeakJust a Girl came out in 1995, but its message still rings true today. The lines, “I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite, so don’t let me have any rights,” are the battle cry for all women who’ve had it up to here.
