Cebu Is Not Just Home To Breathtaking Beaches, It Also Has A Thriving Art Scene

Cebu is more than just white sand beaches and crispy yet juicy lechon

As Cebu continues to become more and more urbanized, its popularity has continued to increase. To thousands of people, it has served as the perfect mix of city life’s comforts and provincial life’s simplicity and beauty. But beyond the touristy things – the food, the beaches and the natural resources – Cebu offers a thriving art scene that is unique and resourceful yet completely attainable.

A hodgepodge of artistic talent

It might come as a bit of a surprise, but Cebu is actually a melting pot for all kinds of art. From the furniture of Debbie Palao to the mosaics of Lhee Taneo, from the illustrations of Danielle Sy to the visual artistry of Kathryn Layno – there is no shortage and no disappointments wherever you look.

Inspiration like no other

It’s clear to see where Cebu’s artists get a lot of their inspiration. Even just a walk around Cebu’s outskirts – where the beaches are virtually untouched and the waves are humble – can make a believer out of anyone.

Moalboal is the perfect place to sit back, take a walk and just breathe in the scenery. Its stretches of white sand, untouched shores and crystal clear waters are picturesque and sometimes exactly what we need to break away.

Hitting up the natural

Some may complain that Cebu is getting too urbanized and that the traffic of Manila has somehow reached its shores, but you can’t deny that the most beautiful and natural sites are almost a stone’s throw away either.

The beauty of Kawasan Falls is almost surreal. The lush greenery serves as a seamless yet contradicting backdrop to the clear waters that fall in white clouds. But amidst all the movement, excitement and the pure need to jump in, there’s a serenity that it offers, too.

A new way to look at things

When all else fails, a new way to look at things will bring you forward. And if anything, that is what Kaila Estrada’s recent trip to Cebu has taught her. Should things all start to look the same and if the between the everyday and the celebrated start to blur, all you need to do is take a deep breath, close your eyes and look at things from a different point of view.

If that means seeing an average seashell for what it could be instead of what it simply is, or seeing what kind of beauty a bamboo shoot can bend into, then it will all be worth it. Or if it means climbing atop the highest peak to get a bird’s eye 360-degree view of what’s become all too familiar, then do it.

In Cebu, that place that always seems to give its visitors a new set of eyes is Osmeña Peak, which gives a 360-degree view of the mountains, the city, the waters and every little thing in between. It’s a daunting climb up, but what the space gives you is worth so much more.

Always onwards

But what Kaila’s trip really proves is that there is more to Cebu and its people than meets the eye. Beyond the breathtaking beaches, delicious food and awe-inspiring locations are people that are talented, intelligent and aware. And what makes it all better is that these people are willing to share what they know, what they’re passionate about and what they love.
