7 Coming-Of-Age Titles You Can Stream on HBO GO
Refreshingly different takes on the youth-on-the-cusp-of-adulthood storyline
They don’t make coming-of-age films and shows like they used to—and that’s a great thing. While iconic titles like Now And Then, The Breakfast Club, Dazed and Confused and Almost Famous are a great source of comfort, there’s also something about the journey toward adulthood through today’s lens.
For one, not all growing-up experiences happen during the teenage years. Countless movie lovers have, in fact, expressed how they crave a coming-of-age story featuring characters in their mid-20s, which feels more in line with the current generation’s views on adulthood. Just as well, there are so many other iterations of the adolescence-to-adulthood story to be explored.
HBO GO has a lot to offer on this front. From series centered on the female experience to riveting movies that reflect the existential crises of the youth in the 2020s: ahead, explore seven coming-of-age titles you can stream on HBO GO this year.
The Sex Lives of College Girls
Starring: Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Gavin Leatherwood, Betti, Midori Francis and Renika Williams
This HBO GO series by writer-producer Justin Noble (Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Never Have I Ever) and Emmy-nominated writer-producer Mindy Kaling follows the story of four freshman roommates at the Essex College in Vermont. The adventures of these young adults lead to some pretty strange, messy, awkward and sometimes downright hilarious encounters.
The Fallout
Starring: Jenna Ortega, Maddie Ziegler, Niles Fitch, Will Ropp, Lumi Pollack, John Ortiz, Julie Bowen and Shailene Woodley
Taking on one reality of high school life in the United States, The Fallout chronicles the emotional toll experienced by high school student Vada Cavell (Jenna Ortega) after a school tragedy.
"The Fallout" is one of the hotly-anticipated HBO GO movies this year. Stream it beginning January 27.
Charm City Kings
Starring: Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Meek Mill, William Catlett, Donielle T. Hansley Jr. and Kezii Curtis
Mouse (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), at 14, is desperate to join the Midnight Clique, an infamous dirt-bike riders’ group in Baltimore that comes alive in the summertime. He finds he has links to the group: his older brother, who made a name for himself as their top rider before his tragic death. Mouse is determined to be part of the Midnight Clique—even if it means making compromises and facing off with some very grownup encounters.
Unpregnant
Starring: Haley Lu Richardson, Barbie Ferreira, Giancarlo Esposito, Alex MacNicoll, Breckin Meyer and Sugar Lyn Beard
After 17-year-old Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) learns she’s pregnant, she sees any and all immediate plans, including heading off to college, brusquely put on hold. Up against a difficult, life-altering decision, she desperately seeks out her ex-best friend Bailey (Barbie Ferreira); together, they take a 1,000-mile road trip to New Mexico, where the journey itself reveals a lot about life, love and relationships.
GULLY
Starring: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Jacob Latimore, Charlie Plummer, John Corbett, Jonathan Majors, and Robin Givens
Three Los Angeles teenagers, unconventional and extreme childhoods, the forging of independence: GULLY is a peek into the lives of Jesse, Calvin, and Nicky, in 48 hours. What unfolds is a story of anarchy, rules being broken and rewritten, and a “rip-roaring ride of drugs and murder across Los Angeles.”
"GULLY" is available for streaming on HBO GO beginning February 19.
Big Time Adolescence
Starring: Griffin Gluck, Pete Davidson, Emily Arlook, Larry John Meyers and Michael Devine
Mo (Griffin Gluck) is 16 and figuring life out, thankful for the guidance (and misguidance) of his older best friend Zeke (Pete Davidson). It appears their journeys, of boyhood and manhood, have more in common than they let on, revealing mischief, conflict and the messy process of self-discovery.
Genera+ion
Starring: Nathanya Alexander, Chloe East, Nava Mau, Lukita Maxwell, Uly Schlesinger, Haley Sanchez, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Chase Sui Wonders and Justice Smith
Generation is a dark comedy starring a next-generation ensemble: Meet Arianna, Naomi, Ana, Delilah, Greta, Nathan, Sam, Riley and Chester, high school students trying to navigate the modern world and all that comes with it. With a conservative community as its backdrop, drama is bound to unfold.
