This one will hit you good right in the childhood. After months of rumors and back-and-forth theories circulating online, Disney confirmed earlier this week that the reboot of the 1994 classic The Lion King is happening for real. That’s right everyone: in two years’ time, you can relive one of the highlights of your childhood alongside a brand-new generation of kids who will likely experience the Disney magic in the Pride Lands for the first time.

First to confirm as a cast member early this year was James Earl Jones, who is set to return as Mufasa—25 years after the original animated film premiered. The star-studded cast of the 2019 remake also includes 12 Years A Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor, Childish Gambino a.k.a. Donald Glover and comedians Keegan Michael-Key and Seth Rogen. It’s looking like a great couple of years for German actress Florence Kasumba, who will first make waves, undoubtedly, in the highly anticipated Marvel flick Black Panther in 2018. Completing the impressive roster are Emmy Award winning actress Alfre Woodard, actor-writer Eric André, Captain America: Civil War star John Kani and English producer, writer and talk show host John Oliver.

Another major, evident cause for commotion? Beyoncé Knowles-Carter landing the role of Nala. It is known that the queen of the Beyhive has been on hiatus since giving birth to her twins, Sir and Rumi; of course a break from the public eye doesn’t necessarily mean Queen Bey has nothing in the works. Behind the scenes, she’s gearing up to headline Coachella 2018, is reportedly working on a new studio album and now, as publicized most recently, working alongside team Disney on The Lion King.

The lack of representation had been a long-standing issue in Hollywood and other corners of the entertainment industry; it was about damn time diverse roles were not only represented accordingly but celebrated as well. Case in point: social media going crazy as soon as The Lion King announcement was posted.
The Lion King is set to be released on July 19, 2019. Till then, we’re sitting tight and helping ourselves to The Lion King musical live in Manila in March next year!
