Ghostbusters Are Back! Or Are They?

In the new Ghostbusters, the characters we knew and loved have bowed out, and a new team now takes charge of capturing ghosts. Meet them here

More than 30 years after the first Ghostbusters movie became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, the franchise returns to the big screen with a new team of ghost hunters with new battles to face, and both new and old ghosts to capture. In the reboot of this well-loved comedy/supernatural movie, which characters do you expect to see again, and which new characters are you excited about?

All-male team out; all-female team in

We will definitely miss the original team of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), but we are looking forward to the new team of hunters ready to rid New York City of ghosts.

The new Ghostbusters team includes Columbia University professor Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig), author Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), and subway worker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones).

A new demon on the rise

In the original film, the Sumerian shape-shifting god Gozer served as the main villain. In the reboot, Gozer’s character was shelved in favor of a new, mysterious demon named Rowan. If he looks strangely familiar, it’s because he’s the cartoon ghost in the Ghostbusters’ iconic logo, made to look angrier and more terrifying.

Say hello (again) to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Remember the fluffy giant monster in the original Ghostbusters movie? (Ray and Peter used to call him Tubby Soft-Squeeze.) Yes, he’s back! The mascot of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Corporation returns to wreak havoc in New York City.

Slimer gets the green light

Slimer, the translucent green ghost made of pure Ectoplasm and has a tremendous appetite, also makes a comeback in the new Ghostbusters movie. (Did you know that Slimer was actually the first ghost successfully captured by the Ghostbusters?)

New eye candy

The new Ghostbusters movie isn’t all slime and grime. Girls will definitely swoon over Kevin (Chris Hemsworth), who plays a telecommunications expert and reception services technician in the film.
