GLOW Is The Show All Feminists Should Watch

It’s everything girl power

Once in a while, a show or a movie comes on that all women should watch. Not because it’s going to be a blockbuster hit, but because the subject matter and characters are important ones to witness. Netflix’s upcoming original series, GLOW, is one of these shows.

The title says a lot.

GLOW stands for Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. In a male-dominated industry that often includes women just for aesthetic purposes, it’s refreshing to actually get into the nitty-gritty of it all. Learn about their stories, their lives, their strength and what continues to push them forward.

Alison Brie has been very honest about her role.

For most of her career, Alison Brie has taken on rather lighthearted roles. Because of this, she’s been categorized as bubbly, girly and quite the goody-two-shoes. It’s a far cry from her role in GLOW, where she plays the downtrodden and struggling artist Ruth Wilder, who is invited to join the 1980s professional wrestling circuit.

To even be considered for Ruth, Alison showed up to her audition with zero makeup and head-to-toe athletic gear. She eventually got the role, but proving herself only got harder from there. She trained under a program for real-life wrestlers, which changed her body and her attitude.

She’s also gone on the record to say she’s never felt more powerful than she does now. And when a beautiful woman from Hollywood embraces her strength and character, we can’t help but applaud.

The entire cast is colorful and outspoken.

While Alison is arguably the star of the show, she is backed up by a group of women that are as rambunctious as they are gorgeous. They are unafraid to question stereotypes and stick up for themselves, but they embrace their femininity as well. They know they have a job to do and they aren’t about to do it half-heartedly.

GLOW premieres on Netflix this June 23.
