House of the Dragon: Everything We Know So Far About the Game of Thrones Prequel

The new HBO series ‘House of the Dragon’ will finally be released this year. What can you look forward to?

Betrayal, political discourse, and dragons—Game of Thrones (or GoT, for short) has them all. When the fantasy-drama series landed on television screens in 2011, it captivated viewers worldwide, becoming the most-watched show on HBO. The book-series-turned-television-juggernaut amassed 17.4 million viewers across its 73-episode run; and while its time is over, the fanfare lives on.

With its unforgettable characters, jaw-dropping battle scenes, and iconic plot twists (we still have nightmares about the Red Wedding), GoT is beloved, and diehard fans remain invested in its rich world and lore. Fortunately, lovers of the series have much to look forward to now that we know its prequel, House of the Dragon, is a go. Ahead, five things we know so far about this highly-anticipated release.

House of the Dragon comes out in August

The GoT prequel is set to stream on August 21, 2022. According to the author and original show producer George R.R. Martin, filming wrapped in February 2022; the series is currently in post-production. To make things sweeter, it has also been confirmed that the first season of House of the Dragon features a generous ten episodes. They all premiere exclusively on HBO GO.

The story is based on the novel “Fire and Blood”

House of the Dragon sets up another tale for longtime GoT fans to sink their teeth into. The prequel goes back 300 years before the original Game of Thrones series, which highlights mainly the rise and fall of House Targaryen. Fans here can expect to witness a civil war among the Targaryens siblings as they determine the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

The list of confirmed Targaryens and cast members is out

Fans looking to see more of the family of dragonlords are not going to be disappointed. Esteemed English actor Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes, The World’s End, and In America) is slated to play the role of King Viserys Targaryen, the Westeros lords’ chosen successor.

Alongside Considine is actress Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) as the king’s first born-child with pure Valyrian blood, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Matt Smith (Doctor Who and The Crown) has also been recruited to play the heir to the throne and younger brother of Viserys, Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Familiar industry giants serve as the showrunners

A Song of Ice and Fire creator and Game of Thrones producer George R.R. Martin is at the helm, serving as showrunner for House of the Dragon. Alongside Martin are Ryan Condal of Hercules and Rampage fame, and GoT alumni Miguel Sapochnik.

Interestingly, the directors of the original series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are not involved. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the controversies surrounding the eighth season.

House Stark and Casterly Rock are both referenced in House of the Dragon

As stated by Martin, callbacks to the original series are to be expected in the prequel. With the Starks being descendants of the “First Men,” they are likely to have a presence in the show, albeit in a smaller capacity compared to the original series.

As for Casterly Rock, the home of the Lannisters, Martin stated that while the Lannisters predate this timeline, another family is set to reside in Casterly Rock. This piece of information could very well ignite speculation and intrigue.

After a Game of Thrones spin-off failed to materialize in 2019, it’s great that fans have a new reason to once again bask in the glory of their beloved novel-turned-television-show.
