Kumu Highlights: The Sunugan All-Stars Rap Battle Brings Hip-Hop Culture to Livestreaming
From the streets to streaming (plus, more to come in 2022)
The local hip-hop scene is alive, well, and now, on streaming. With the successful first run of Kumu’s Sunugan All-Stars Rap Battle, audiences got an exciting preview of what the Kumunity can expect heading into 2022.
This takeover of the live-streaming space (the biggest hip-hop event yet on Kumu) was a way to celebrate the birthday of FlipTop King Loonie. It brought together the biggest names in Pinoy hip-hop, such as Gloc 9, Shanti Dope, Abra, Flow G, Ron Henley, Apekz, Smugglaz, Princess Thea, Don Pao, Zaki, Lanzeta, Invictus, Sak Maestro, Harlem, J-Hon and DJ Buddah.
“We wanted to extravagantly showcase what has transpired in 2021 and what will happen for the next years,” shares Sunugan All-Stars Rap Battle director Idyll Peroramas. “[Expect] rap battles, hip-hop collaborations, exclusive performances, giveaways for the fans and many more.”
This is also Kumu’s way of paying homage to the rich history of Pinoy hip-hop: from Pinoy Rap King Francis M.’s hit album, Yo!, to more contemporary artists on the rise on Spotify.
“[Hip-hop] has served as an authentic and powerful medium for self-expression,” Kumu explains in a press release. “[It’s] a way [for Filipinos] to showcase [their] lyrical gifts, not just in Tagalog, but languages such as Ilokano, Bisaya, Bikolano, Ilonggo, Chavacano and many others.”
Factoring in the involvement of streaming giant Spotify, the support for Pinoy hip-hop’s rising influence has increased manifold. This is, in part, thanks to new dedicated playlists on the platform such as Kalye Hip-Hop, Bago Sa Rap, Dugong Hip-Hop, and Pinas Vibes.
Kumu plans to keep the momentum going. “Kumu has been a convenient, consistent and enriching platform for the hip-hop industry, especially this pandemic,” affirms FlipTop King Loonie. “[It’s] been impactful to us and our fans and followers.
