An Inside Look At LSS

What’s been going on in the production of LSS?

September 13 will kick off Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019, where 10 local films will be showcased for everyone’s viewing. Included in the lineup this year is LSS, produced by Globe Studios and Dokimos Media Inc., and directed by Jade Castro.

The film, which stars Gabbi Garcia and Khalil Ramos, is a story of two 20-something individuals who meet by chance and whose lives keep intercepting as they follow an indie band, Ben&Ben. Sarah (Garcia) has chosen to put her musical career on the line to provide for her family. Zak (Ramos), on the other hand, is yearning for his estranged father and eager to be take his relationship with his best friend to the next level.

As their paths keep crossing, they come to realize that maybe the roads that their lives are on might not be their only option.

But there’s so much more that goes into a film than its story, its actors and its end product. So we spoke with Kren Yap, LSS Head Of Development, to know what really went on behind the camera.

Getting on board and keeping things running

The second draft of the script reached Yap in November 2017 and he was sold from then on. The story was simple—just a story of a girl and a boy and a band that they loved—and there was no real intention for it to get as much attention as it has. But as Yap describes, everything kind of fell into place for the film, from its early acceptance into Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino—it was one of the three that passed the script-writing approval—to the heavy inclusion of Ben&Ben into the scenes.

Over and over during our sit down, Yap would mention how much of a collaborative project LSS became. Egos in the industry might be the norm, but they were suppressed for the film and everyone went above and beyond their specific call of duty to make sure that the wheels kept rolling.

Worthy of special mention are the members of Ben&Ben, who initially had doubts about being filmed on-screen in such capacity. But a look at the script and a clear understanding of how the story could be so much more with them playing themselves was enough to get them on board. In fact, they went through the exact same workshops that Garcia and Ramos did.

The chemistry

When it comes to films, on-screen chemistry can be the determining factor between failure and success. And while the rest of us know by now that Garcia and Ramos are a real-life couple who share snippets of their love story on social media, this in no way provides certainty that the same will translate on the big screen.

The two young actors, however, were pretty much side by side throughout production. Yap made a comment about their very first scene together, which was enough to get everyone that had the privilege of watching kilig. And to make matters better, Garcia would stand-in in scenes she didn’t wasn’t part of just to support Ramos—and vice versa.

You’re getting more than you bargained for

On the surface level, LSS is a romance story that just so happens to feature one of the country’s budding actors and is set to a soundtrack re-recorded for the film by one of the country’s most popular bands. These things alone would usually spell success, a blockbuster for the blockbusters, but you’re in for more than you bargained for.

Without giving too much away, let’s just say that Yap described LSS as an analogy of the journey of Ben&Ben, who—when the film was just an idea—were not as followed as they are now, and the production itself. There are so many roads that have converged together for this film and so many ideas were put on the table that just seemed to fit together; everything just fell into place.
