The Most Popular Fan Theories Connecting Rey And Luke Skywalker

Who’s calling it?

Star Wars, one of the most beloved franchises of all time, dropped one major bomb in Episode 5: Revenge Of The Sith. Even now, decades later, unsuspecting new generations are surprised upon learning that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker a.k.a Luke’s father.

But with Star Wars: The Last Jedi almost upon us, the attention now goes to the relationship between Rey and Luke. And people are getting really creative as they try to bridge that gap.

Rey is Luke’s daughter

This is probably the most popular theory out there and there is enough evidence to support it. For one thing, Rey’s story mirrors Luke’s. Despite growing up as what some might call an uncultured orphan on a desert planet, she eventually finds her natural talent as a pilot and lightsaber wielder. Furthermore, Rey has a force vision when she touches Luke’s lightsaber, which means that she is strongly linked to its previous owner.

Need more proof? Luke, in the trailer of The Force Awakens, says one particular line that hits home. “The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it,” he says. “You have that power, too.” Sure, we don’t see who he’s talking to exactly, but context clues seem to point to Rey.

Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin

Then again, there are people that think Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin instead. The theory suggests that Rey’s life is meant to be Anakin’s repentance—meaning her harsh childhood was his purgatory—and that her rise to power is his attempt at redemption. This is further strengthened by the fact that Luke’s lightsaber was originally Anakin’s and this is why Rey has a powerful connection to it.

Moreover, this theory answers why Kylo Ren cannot communicate with his grandfather. Anakin is no longer a Force ghost because he’s actually been reincarnated.

Rey is Luke’s niece

This one is a little far fetches and arguably dependent on bias, but a large number of people believe that Rey is the daughter of Han and Leia. In The Force Awakens, as Rey remarks how she never believed there was so much “green” in the universe, Han gives her a look that some have considered a guilty one. Likewise, Leia’s reaction to Rey seems to speak of a deeper connection, which have taken as proof of a mother-daughter bond.

Bonus round: Rey is the clone of Luke

In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke’s hand is severed in his fight with Darth Vader. From this hand, a corner of the internet believes that Luke was cloned into a woman—Rey. And while it sounds a little farfetched, there is some weight to the theory.

The story goes that an evil entity like Supreme Leader Snoke foresaw the inevitable fall of the Empire and wanted a way to create a Jedi of his own to eventually manipulate. The result of that experiment? Rey.

Right now, there is no way to validate or confirm any of these theories and the countless others that are circling the web. Fortunately, we’re about to get one step closer when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 13.
