Your Next 5: Movies You Should Watch If You Loved Netflix's Annihilation
The box office hit starring Natalie Portman
Based on the best-selling novel by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation follows the story of Lena (played by Natalie Portman), a former solider and biologist, who embarks on an expedition into supernatural territory. A part of the American coastline, now called Area X, is enveloped by a mysterious shimmering electromagnetic field that only continues to spread. Nothing could prepare Lena and her team for the impending danger—mutating landscapes, unimaginable creatures and all.
“I think that [this is] one of those rare movies that gives you so much to talk about afterwards and everyone’s interpretation is valid and kind of completes the piece,” Natalie Portman told Global Grind TV. Extremely proud to work on a genuinely unique science fiction film with four other women, she adds: “We’re so used to seeing five men go on an expedition together in films. That’s, like, a regular part of every war movie or every exploration movie. I just think that normalizing a group of women working together is everything. Because then, it also allows women to just be taken for their personalities or talents or idea as opposed to: ‘Oh, she’s the woman.’ You’re not representing your entire gender; you can have a personality.”
