Movies To Watch With Your Loved Ones This Long Weekend

If you’re staying home, you’re going to need some movies to watch

You may not remember it, but your loved ones can likely recall the first time you tripped, the first day you put on your school uniform and the first performance you ever took part in. Those moments are a far cry from what your life might be like now, with everyone in the family doing their own thing and minding their own business—but that’s exactly why long weekends are something to be thankful for.

Not only do long weekends give you a break from school work and deadlines and meetings, they also let you spend time at home with your family. So when you’re done with the traditional festivities for All Souls Day and All Saints Day, why not take the time to relax with some feel-good family movies to watch?

Mamma Mia!

This musical-turned-film follow the quest of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she tries to find her biological father in the hopethat he’ll give her away on her wedding day. A few days before the ceremony, she invites three men who were once the lovers of her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep).

Roma

Based on director and writer Alfonso Cuaron’s childhood upbringing in Mexico City’s Colonia Roma, the film focuses on Sofia (Marina de Tavira), a mother of four children, and Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), her pregnant helper. The two women’s social status may be worlds apart, but they are united by a common struggle to save their relationship with their husbands and keep their children—both living and soon-to-be-born—alive amidst the tumultuous Roma.

Tallulah

If you’d rather have a few laughs with your family, Tallulah is for you.

The film tells the story of teenager Tallulah (Ellen Page) who ends up taking another woman’s baby at a chance to get back together with her ex-boyfriend, Nico (Evan Jonigkeit). She pretends that the baby is Nico’s and asks his mother Margo (Allison Janney) for help to find him again.

Brave

Why not switch things up with an animated film this weekend?

Brave tackles the complicated relationship between Merida, a rebellious princess who refused to be betrothed, and her mother Queen Elinor, who wants nothing more than for her to marry a prince from an allied clan. With the help of some magic and the rest of Merida’s clan, some funny moments ensue—but not without Pixar’s classic heartfelt moments, of course.

Ang Tanging Ina

Wrapping up this list is a film starring the Queen of Comedy. Playing Ina, Ai-Ai delas Alas takes on multiple—sometimes odd—jobs to provide for her 12 children. However, it seems like nothing can ever satisfy their needs and she starts to feel unappreciated.

It’s definitely not a heavy drama, but we’re trying to keep things light this weekend.
