The Must-Play Video Games in 2022

We discuss the most anticipated games of the year: from ‘Elden Ring’ to ‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’

There’s a reason gaming has become a pastime shared by billions. Video games have enriched people’s lives through complex storylines, challenging yet innovative mechanics, and a sense of community with like-minded people. Despite tough times, game developers have sought ways to ramp up their releases in 2020 and 2021, treating gamers to an influx of triple-A titles like Genshin Impact and the Final Fantasy 7 remake.

The year 2022 is no different. Here, the calendar of video game releases is chock-full of noteworthy titles you should definitely add to your gaming list. Prepare for the next drop (or the next sale!) with the guide straight ahead. Plus, read on for future releases to be excited about.

2022’s Must-Play Video Games

Elden Ring

FromSoftware, Inc. has produced some of the best single-player action games, from Dark Souls to Bloodborne, but Elden Ring might just be the studio’s most ambitious project yet.

Boasting a massive landscape filled with tough challenges, unique interactions, and exciting rewards, the linearity FromSoftware, Inc. has been known for is essentially thrown out the window in this game in exchange for the countless possibilities of an open-world RPG.

Elden Ring is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. If you’re looking to start game streaming, this is definitely a must-play—do it for reactions and commentary as you face off with enemies and take on various quests.

Horizon Forbidden West

A sequel to the hit 2017 title Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West continues the story of Aloy, a Neolithic woman. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic America, where cybernetic dinosaurs inhabit the world and tribal culture remains supreme.

The game successfully combines prehistoric elements with science fiction, while the gameplay offers a beautiful map for you to explore. The side quests are challenging enough to provide replay value for fans, too.

Horizon Forbidden West is currently exclusive to the PlayStation but is expected to become available on the Steam and Epic Games store much like its predecessor.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

Ghost of Tsushima was arguably the most popular RPG of 2020—and with good reason.

After its initial release, fans were treated to a director’s-cut version in the middle of 2021, where gamers could enjoy more of the world it created, the captivating story it told, and the out-of-this-world gameplay that kept people engaged.

Now, the fanfare carries over into 2022. Sucker Punch takes their triple-A title to new heights to give it more replay value with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. The revamped title includes a new skin, a new item, and a whole new island to explore.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is exclusive on the PS4 and PS5.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Zombie games are a mainstay in the survival-horror genre, and Dying Light 2 Stay Human has become a staple in its own right. The first game became popular for integrating parkour and a shoot-‘em-up style into its gameplay, but the sequel still manages to take things several notches higher. Dying Light 2 emphasizes the parkour element with stealth, making it more interactive.

If you love a classic survival-horror game, you’ll be happy to know that Dying Light 2 is available on both PlayStation and Xbox. (On that note: upgrade your experience by getting quality gadgets and accessories from the Globe Shop for the best gaming experience possible.)

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

As a video game plenty of Pokémon fans grew up with, there’s no ignoring the fact that this pop culture phenomenon has staying power. Enjoyed by millions, Game Freak has developed countless Pokémon games for the Nintendo Gameboy, DS, and Switch. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an enhancement of previous games that includes a new region called Hisui.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus checks all the boxes for those who love the classic gameplay but are itching for something new. The game is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

Games to Be on the Lookout For

You may be wondering: what other games are coming out in 2022? In addition to the titles above, here are the games about to drop that you should definitely check out:

God of War: Ragnarok

What other things need to be said about God of War? As one of Sony’s biggest series to date, this won Game of the Year in 2018, with a hotly-anticipated sequel set for release later this year. What adventures await Kratos and Atreus? We’ll find out soon enough.

Hogwarts Legacy

While there have been game adaptations of the book in the past, the potential that Hogwarts Legacy currently holds is something else. The game is set to boast an immersive, open-world gameplay with the magical elements that every Potterhead loves.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel

The Legend of Zelda series is perhaps Nintendo’s most beloved action-adventure RPG. Known for its outstanding graphics, breathtaking open-world gameplay, and suspense-filled dungeons, Breath of the Wild took the gaming world by storm, bagging multiple awards from 2016 to 2018. Its sequel is one of the most anticipated titles in 2022.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

With shadowy figures roaming the streets of Tokyo, it’s clear that something has gone wrong in Japan. The game Ghostwire: Tokyo takes inspiration from the monsters in Japanese lore with a mix of survival-horror elements. The studio is also behind The Evil Within, so gamers are in for a treat.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Nintendo is set to release another duo of Pokémon games: Scarlet and Violet. The video game, it’s said, makes use of the style and design of Legends: Arceus as a jumping-off point, but features a new region and Gen 9 Pokedex.
