Find out what it really means to share a Netflix account "within a household," how to continue watching when you're on the go, what you can do to extend account access, and more. What Does Netflix Account Sharing Mean?

Prior to Netflix's crackdown on password-sharing, subscribers could use anyone’s account so long as they had the password. But now, one account is only "for use by one household."

That means you and the people you live with can still share a single account without paying additional fees. You can easily set up and manage your Netflix household through most TV devices. Members can watch on up to four supported devices at once if they’re on the same WiFi network or using the same internet connection.

But just because you're sharing one account doesn't mean everyone connected to it needs to watch the same things in the same room. You can still have unique profiles, stream different titles separately, and enjoy Netflix on your own time.

How Does Netflix Detect Password Sharing?

According to Netflix, the streaming platform uses data like IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to gauge if someone outside the household is accessing the account. While there are no penalties for sharing passwords (as of now), these measures make it harder to use another household’s account for free.

Can You Still Use Netflix When You’re Not Home?

Yes, you can still use the Netflix app even when traveling. You can access it through portable devices, like your mobile phone or laptop, and even a new TV simply by signing in.

Netflix also allows members to "register" new devices if they have a second home or frequently travel to a specific location. However, you may need to verify the login to confirm no users outside of your primary household are trying to force their way into your shared Netflix account.

Can You Give Access to Users Outside Your Household?

Yes, Netflix has added a new feature that allows you to share your account with people who don't live with you. Depending on your Netflix plan, you can add one to two members outside your household.

The Standard Plan allows you to add one extra member outside your household while the Premium Plan gives you the option to add up to two members who don't live with you. Each member will cost an extra ₱149 per month. The primary account holder must purchase the slot then send the invite to join.

There's also the Profile Transfer feature where anyone on your account can transfer their profile to a new or existing membership. For example, if you have a sibling who's moved to a new household, they can use this feature to keep recommendations, viewing history, and other data associated with their profile.

Should You Get Your Own Netflix Account?

The Netflix shake-up likely locked you out if you used a friend’s or relative's account for free earlier this year. So, is it time to get your own membership? Yes! It's still worth paying for the exclusive perks, even if you can't share your password anymore. Here are just a few of the benefits of a paid Netflix subscription.

1. Get access to an extensive media library.

Netflix has one of the largest streaming catalogs in the world. They have must-watch TV shows and movies in virtually every genre, from Action to Thriller. It's also home to hundreds of award-winning and critically acclaimed originals like Stranger Things, The Crown, The Haunting of Hill House, Wednesday, and more.

2. Stream on multiple devices.

You can easily watch Netflix through numerous supported devices with a reliable internet connection. Not only does that list include computers, smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, but also game consoles and streaming media players.

3. Enjoy user-friendly navigation.

Both the Netflix app and website offer a very intuitive navigational experience. Some notable features include:

  • Browse by category, genre, and language.
  • Stay on top of all new releases via the "New & Popular" section and set alerts for your most anticipated titles.
  • Add TV shows and movies to your watch list by clicking the plus (+) symbol on their title card, then browse those saved titles in one curated section.

New and non-tech-savvy users can master the platform within a few minutes, no tutorials necessary!

4. Play original mobile games.

Did you know that Netflix offers unlimited access to over 50 mobile games? That's right! No ads, no hidden fees. You can download and play for free with your membership. Supported devices include Android phones and tablets, iPhones, and iPads.

Titles include a digital version of the popular card game Exploding Kittens, crowd-favorite party staple Heads Up, and even games inspired by Netflix originals like Stranger Things.

5. Choose a plan that works for your budget and lifestyle

Netflix offers four plans with different price points and benefits, but all come with unlimited ad-free viewing and gaming. The most affordable of the options is the Mobile-only plan, costing only ₱149/month. It allows users to stream and download on one phone or tablet at a time. Next up is the Basic plan at ₱249/month. It's accessible through any of the service's supported devices.

Next, there's the Standard Netflix plan, starting at ₱399/month. You can use it on two devices at once and add one non-household member for an additional ₱149/month. Finally, there's Netflix Premium, starting at ₱549/month. You can add up to two non-household members, access the platform on four devices simultaneously, and watch in Ultra HD.

Are you thinking of getting your own Netflix account? You won't regret it! The platform is one of the most worthwhile streaming services in the market. For a hassle-free experience, subscribe with your postpaid plan and ensure smooth, uninterrupted viewing with a reliable internet connection.
