New Disney Princesses

We love the princesses of yore, but Disney’s new princesses kick butt—and we love it!

There are many things to love and admire about Disney’s classic princesses, like being brave, gracious and kind. But modern times call for a new breed of princesses—the kind that can make decisions for herself and kick butt. Meet Disney’s latest additions to their growing roster, Princess Elena of Avalor and Princess Moana:

Elena of Avalor

Disney’s first-ever Latina princess, Elena Castillo Flores just saved her kingdom of Avalor from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as its crown princess. She has special powers that come from a scepter of light, but unlike in previous storylines, Elena has to choose when to use as it weakens her with every use. The animated series also shies away from romance this time around and instead, imparts the importance of compassion, resilience and thoughtfulness upon its young viewers. Aimee Carrero lends her voice to the 16-year-old princess. Premieres November 13 on Disney Channel.

Moana

Moana is a Polynesian princess and the only daughter of a chief navigation expert. She’s called out to sea on a brave mission to save her people and fulfill an ancient quest. Along the way, the princess meets demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) who helps her navigate through the dangerous open ocean.

There’s no love story here either if you’re looking for a prince charming. Moana treads on the storyline of self-discovery and finding one’s own identity.

14-year-old Hawaiian newcomer Auli'I Cravahlo brings Moana’s character to life. In theaters November 23.
