4 New K-Pop Girl Groups To Look Forward To
These are the girls that should be on your radar
As we welcome 2022, we often say, “New year, new goals.” But for K-pop fans, .it's more like "new year, new groups to stan." From stellar album releases to multiple B-sides continuously playing on our heavy rotation, every K-pop fan can say that 2021 was nothing short of amazing. However, the latest roster of groups has us on the edge of our seats, anticipating their upcoming releases and the exciting year that’s yet to unfold. So far, we’ve got powerful lineups, returning alumni and more music to make this year more fun and exciting.
Ahead, we list down the girl groups expected to make higher waves this year.
Made up of Yujin, Xiaoting, Mashiro, Chaehyun, Dayeon, Hikaru, Bahiyyih, Youngeun and Yeseo, Kep1er’s is one group to watch out for. The final trainees now have their time in the spotlight after vying for a spot in the reality show, Girls Planet 999. Their blood, sweat and tears—broadcasted for the world to see—are now paying off after debuting their first song WA DA DA and their first mini-album called First Impact. Kep1er’s reign just started, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
Starship Entertainment, the label behind K-pop icons like Monsta X and Sistar, debuted a new girl group called IVE. Do you see any familiar faces? IZ*ONE alumnae Yujin and Wonyoung are at the helm of IVE. These girls pack a power punch with Gaeul, Rei, Liz and Leeseo completing the lineup. But, if you need more convincing, these girls are already killing it with their debut song ELEVEN. According to Soompi, the group received four music show wins 16 days into their debut, a feat reached by top girl groups such as BLACKPINK and ITZY, which just proves IVE’s strong potential.
For GFriend fans, 2021 proved to be more painful than usual. On May 6th, fans were surprised that the group announced its disbandment after six years in the industry. Months later, updates about their activities spread around news sites. Some went into acting, while some pursued music. Much to everyone’s glee, three members of GFriend decided to stay together under a new label: Big Planet Made. Umji, SinB and Eunha revealed themselves as members of VIVIZ, an upcoming girl group. While we wait for their official debut date, nothing is as exciting as seeing your favorites return.
Girls On Top
SM Entertainment is no stranger to supergroup projects. After YOUNIQUE UNIT and SuperM (the Avengers of K-Pop) comes a strong—if not the strongest—lineup ever. Meet Girls On Top (GOT), composed of K-pop trailblazer BoA, Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon and Taeyeon, Red Velvet’s Wendy and Seulgi and Aespa’s Winter and Karina. They performed their first song, Step Back at the SMTOWN2022: SMCU EXPRESS @ KWANGYA concert. Here’s to hoping this isn’t a one-off project because we can’t just get enough of GOT.
