A little 2 Chainz, a little more Ariana Grande and all the other tracks you can put on blast this month

When it came to new tunes, February cleaned up—and wrapped up—quite nicely. At its tail-end, music lovers got an addictive last hoorah. “Nights Like This” singer Kehlani closed out February with the release of her raw, emotional mixtape While We Wait. And as an afternoon spent streaming the nine-track release proved, it was absolutely worth the wait. That same week, both hip-hop act Offset and country rock artist Adia Victoria dropped their sophomore studio albums FATHER OF 4 and Silences respectively.

Just like that, after the thank u, next fanfare had passed and Don’t Feed The Pop Monster earned its moment, March snuck up from behind.

The first day of the month alone came with a whopping 125+ new studio releases. Neo-soul album When I Get Home by Solange was one of them; Weezer (Black Album) by, well, Weezer kicked off March, too. Hozier delivered on his promise of fresh yet familiar new music with Wasteland, Baby! as did Sundara Karma with Ulfilas’ Alphabet.

With a lot more yet to drop and yet to be heard, we better get crackin’ on the new March anthems early on. Ahead, go! Magazine’s monthly roundup of nine new tracks to check out in March 2019 (so far, at least).

“K Bye (feat. Sofia)” by Kiana Valenciano

CARELESS Manila’s resident R&B babe Kiana Valenciano has come into her own…and there’s a fantastic new soundtrack to go with it. After dropping singles, EP’s and remixes since getting her start in 2016, the 26-year-old artist has finally produced and released her own full-length studio album with Tarsier Records entitled See Me. You can stream the 10-track debut album on Spotify, but to start? How about the collaborative track “K Bye” below featuring industry newcomer Sofia?

“Illusions” by Sundara Karma

It’s been a grueling four-month wait since news broke about a new Sundara Karma album on the horizon. Late in 2018, the English indie pop band teased fans with singles “The Changover” and “One Last Night On This Earth,” which both pointed to a more diverse sound that’s still unique to the soul of Sundara Karma. “People have said this new direction is quite weird, and I can understand why people would think it as well,”  frontman Oscar Pollock told DIY in February. “But it’s just stuff that I liked. That’s it. I wish I could say more! It’s just who we are; it feels so natural.”

23-year-old Amber Bain returns as indie pop act The Japanese House with the same flirtatious relationship with the pop genre and a new album under her belt. Good at Falling, while peppered with several upbeat songs, can put anyone in a deep, relaxing trance. Noteworthy tracks include “You Seem So Happy,” “Maybe You’re the Reason” and “We Talk All the Time.”

“Flux” by Ellie Goulding

Here’s proof that March really is the month of comebacks in music: Another artist returning to the scene is Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding, whose last full-length album was Delirium in 2015. And in true Goulding fashion, what better way to introduce the next era—and album—than via a new love song? Gut-wrenching heartbreak included. “Flux is about thinking about the person who you almost ended up with,” Goulding told The Guardian. “I’m a sucker for what could have been.”

For his heavily collaborative fifth studio album, 2 Chainz recruits the likes of Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott and pint-sized pop sensation Ariana Grande. The result of such a collaboration makes a statement, juggling the personal and societal, rather than something that merely presents a catchy yet predictable club anthem.
