Taylor Swift's New Single Is Out And We Are Shookt AF
“Look What You Made Me Do” is another lesson on cashing in on your controversies
Taylor Swift sent the internet abuzz when she took her social media detox to the next level and wiped all her accounts clean. In the 10 days that came after, the 27-year-old pop star managed to pull a stunt that’s never been done before: She first teased fans with a cryptic video of a slithering snake, ultimately letting them know that the new era of Swift was upon them. Along with it, of course, people knew to expect tea. If Taylor Swift intended on ending her hiatus with the scandal that prompted it, there definitely was going to be tea. In one fell swoop, she then announced the release date of her upcoming album Reputation, dropped a new single and launched its music video—with all eyes watching, no less, at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.
“Look What You Made Me Do” is Taylor Swift’s dark, electro-pop instant-hit that has diss track written all over it. The reactions to the official audio released on August 25 were varied. Lyrics like “I've got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined” made it appear as though Taylor’s new single was just a new take on an old, predictable theme: vindication. Fans however were stoked to get new material from Taylor after a three-year wait, calling #LWYMMD the diss track to end all diss tracks.
Lines like “And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure / Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours” had people bringing out the laundry list of Taylor’s sworn enemies: Will she roast Kim and Kanye? Will it be Katy Perry or Calvin Harris? What about Nicki Minaj? It turns out the person at the receiving end of all this shade would be none other than Taylor Swift, the woman determined to end…herself. Everyone else she takes a jab at along the way is just collateral damage.
To date, “Look What You Made Me Do” has 37 million views on YouTube, has broken Spotify streaming records and continues to send Twitter in a frenzy. Who else is shookt?
Here, the Twitterverse recounts Taylor’s character development:
Black Twitter had a field day comparing this music video still to Beyoncé’s “Formation” MV:
