Films and TV series are portals to an alternate universe, one without the weight of an individual’s worries and responsibilities. Whether you’re escaping from a distressing break-up or a letdown in the workplace, there’s a show made for the particular season you’re in. Here are shows with alternative realities you can watch on Amazon Prime Video when you need a break.

The Boys

Premiered at Comic Con 2019, The Boys is an adaptation of an American comic book series written by Garth Ennis. Co-created by Seth Rogen, it’s a satire on the superhero trope—a timely reimagining of a world where they’re subversive and corrupt. The star-studded cast includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Elisabeth Shue, Dominique McElligott, Karen Fukuhara, Jessie T. Usher and Chace Crawford.

Anybody with (supernatural) power will inevitably abuse it; the world’s ever-seen and beloved “The Seven” takes on this position. They face rebellion because of their misuse of authority—producing collateral damage—in the hands of “The Boys” who will do anything and everything to oppose them.

Carnival Row

Carnival Row is reminiscent of The Greatest Showman, but with a dismal interpretation—sans the musical performances worthy of an Oscar nod. It centers on a dangerous love affair between a war-hardened detective (Orlando Bloom) and a faerie refugee (Cara Delevingne) set in a Victorian fantasy world. The world they made together falls apart when a string of murders reveal a terrifying creature underground. If Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes had a child, this would be it.

Good Omens

Welcome to the end times. Based on the bestselling book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens is a lighthearted, yet controversial take on the angel-demon relationship starring Michael Sheen (Aziraphale) and David Tennant (Crowley). They form an unlikely alliance to stop Armageddon by finding and tending to an 11-year-old Antichrist. We argue the case for good and evil in this six-part series.
