Trivia: When James Cameron was writing the movie, he intended for the main characters Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson to be entirely fictitious. It was only after the script was finished that he discovered that there had been a real “J. Dawson” who died aboard the Titanic. This “J. Dawson” was trimmer Joseph Dawson, who had been born September 1888 in Dublin, Ireland. His body was salvaged and buried at Fairview Lawn cemetery in Nova Scotia with many other Titanic victims. Kathy Bates (Molly Brown)

Trivia: Bates’ character, Molly Brown, is based on a real person: American socialite Margaret “Maggie” Brown boarded the RMS Titanic as she was hoping to pay her sick grandson a visit. According to various accounts like Stephanie L. Barczewski's, who penned "Titanic: A Night Remembered", Brown was later called "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" because she "helped in the ship's evacuation, taking an oar herself in her lifeboat and urging that the lifeboat go back and save more people."

Famous Line: [As Jack joins Rose and company at a first-class dinner, Molly Brown coaches him on the proper use of cutlery] “Just start from the outside and work your way in.”

Frances Fisher (Ruth Dewitt Bukater)

Trivia: During the corset scene, it is originally Rose who is supposed to be tightening her mother's corset. However, James Cameron and the actresses felt that the scene had much more of an effect of Rose being in the corset. (via IMDb)

Bill Paxton (Brock Lovett)

Trivia: Titanic was Bill Paxton's fourth collaboration with director James Cameron, following The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986) and True Lies (1994). They later made Ghosts of the Abyss (2003) together, which became their final collaboration with Paxton's death in February 2017. (via IMDb)

Victor Garber (Thomas Andrews)

Trivia: Thomas Andrews, Jr. was an Irish shipbuilder who served as the general manager of the RMS Titanic. He perished on the ship along with 1,502 others.

Famous Line: “The ship will sink.”

Jonathan Hyde (Bruce Ismay)

Trivia: To this day, family members of the real Bruce Ismay are working to clear his name given James Cameron’s depiction of the English businessman. His descendant, Malcolm Cheape, told BBC: “I think that he was treated really badly by the American press—and probably not quite so badly by the British press but his story was never really told—there were a lot of lies in the American press about him escaping on the first life boat and dressing up as a woman and things like that which must have deeply hurt him.”

Famous Line: “The press knows the size of Titanic. Now I want them to marvel at her speed. We must give them something new to print! This maiden voyage of Titanic must make headlines!”

Bernard Hill (Captain Smith)

Trivia: Captain Edward John Smith served on several other White Star Line vessels before serving as captain of the RMS Titanic. According to Steward Edward Brown, Smith’s last words were: “Well, boys, do your best for the women and children, and look out for yourselves.”

Famous Line: “Well, I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay.”

Danny Nucci (Fabrizio de Rossi)

Trivia: In the original script, Fabrizio wasn't killed by the falling smokestack, managing to avoid it at the last second. After the ship sank, he tried to board a lifeboat, but Cal beat him in the head with an oar, cutting open his scalp, and sarcastically tells him to swim to his destination. Ioan Gruffudd (Fifth Officer Harold Lowe)

Trivia: As portrayed accurately in the film, Fifth Officer Harold Lowe commandeered one lifeboat to look for survivors after the Titanic sank. He and the crewmen onboard were able to save four people.

Famous Line: “Is there anyone alive out there? Can anyone hear me?”

James Cameron (several cameos as a movie extra)

Trivia: James Cameron went on the dives to the real Titanic himself, and found it an overwhelming emotional experience to actually see it. He ended up spending more time with the ship than its living passengers did. (via IMDb)
