Tala

This homegrown viral sensation features choreography set to pop star Sarah Geronimo’s 2015 song Tala. With the local LGBT+ community trying their hand at the iconic moves, the trend expanded from TikTok and hit social media under the hashtags #TalaDanceChallenge and #TalaChallenge, which gained worldwide traction.

Local celebrities such as Maine Mendoza, Arjo Atayde and even Jollibee jumped on the bandwagon to do their own versions.

Catriona

This song, released in 2019 by hip-hop artist Matthaios, was obviously inspired by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Grey. Rapper Mannex Manhattan began the trend with smooth dance steps to match the catchy and lovey-dovey lyrics, making the hashtag #CatrionaDance take off on TikTok and other social media platforms.

Most notable is local actor Inigo Pascual’s version, featuring the titular pageant queen herself.

Say So

TikTok user @yodelinghaley was the first to pick up Doja Cat’s 2019 song Say So to create fun snippets of choreography. Following her videos, many other notable TikTok and YouTube stars decided to create their own versions, earning the song viral status.

The success of her quirky dance moves led Haley to create choreography for the whole song, catching Doja Cat’s attention and landing the TikTok star an appearance in Doja’s music video for it.

GoCreatePH

If you’ve got a serious case of wanderlust, #GoCreatePH videos will surely uplift your spirits. The Department of Tourism spearheaded the dance challenge to highlight the local sights and scenic places across the country through fun dance moves, smooth transitions and even flashy outfit changes.

TikTok’s geotagging feature plays a key role in identifying these places to encourage both local and international tourism, all while making it engaging for the younger crowds.

Don’t Start Now

Don’t Start Now became a meme after TikTok user @isaac_tuazon created a skit of turning around and running away from a schoolmate at the mall, set to the tune of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now

Tuazon’s viral video became the foundation for the meme, providing the formula of timing the lyric “did a full 180” to the user avoiding whatever it is or whoever they are running into. TikTok’s green screen functions add an extra layer of fun to an already hilarious and relatable meme.

Switch Challenge

The premise of this TikTok is simple: The user and another person, pet or even a random object record in front of a mirror dancing to the first 10 seconds of Drake’s song Nonstop. The last line, “I just flipped the switch” becomes the cue for an actual light switch flip, revealing the user and the other participant switching places and clothes (or look) once the lights are back on.

It’s equal parts amazing and amusing to see outfit switches between couples, grandkids and grandparents and celebrities. Even J. Lo herself couldn’t resist joining in the fun!
