Trese Is Coming To Netflix: A Milestone for Pinoy Pop Culture
June is looking like a monumental month for Pinoy Netflix subscribers.
Beyond incorporating Filipino films like Heneral Luna, BuyBust and Dead Kids into their roster, the streaming platform made it known in late 2018 that their next big move is to produce a whopping 17 all-new original productions from all over Asia. We learned then that Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo’s Pinoy graphic novel Trese is one of them. And after the long wait, it’s finally premiering.
Written by advertising director-turned-comic man of the Philippines Budjette Tan, Trese recounts the eerie adventures of one Alexandra Trese AKA the resident supernatural crimes investigator. From one gut-wrenching case to another, she unearths, unlocks and grapples with the many mysteries hiding within the streets of Metro Manila, where mythical creatures and monsters (mga aswang, engkanto at multo) live among humans.
As Trese gears up to make her global debut on Netflix, the comic’s steadily growing following since its launch in 2005 is nothing short of stoked for all this to take shape. The creators, naturally, share the same sentiment. “You know that feeling when you’ve won a pitch and after all the screaming and jumping and high-fiving and fist-bumping you go back to your desk and you realize the amount of work that needs to be done?” wrote Budjette Tan on the official Trese blog in 2018. “That’s how the past 48 hours have felt like. And on top of all of that, things have been more busy than usual at the office. (Makes me wonder if Santa’s elves are this busy as we come closer to the holiday season.)”
On June 11, witness illustrator Kajo Baldisimo’s work reimagined as creepy tales like At the Intersection of Balete and 13th Street and Patient 414 in Mandaluyong get what can only be a visually stunning Netflix adaptation.
The star-studded lineup of Filipino voice actors likewise hints at Trese’s promise. Putting together two different casts––to cover the English and Filipino languages respectively––Netflix has assembled quite the dream team with the following actors and roles:
