We've got some great news for The Umbrella Academy fans!
The power-packed superhero series, which is one of the most beloved Netflix originals of 2019, is finally set to return. But, given that there's a long wait between the first and second seasons, we've prepared a quick Umbrella Academy recap to help you get ready for the new episodes.
If you haven't finished watching the first season, spoiler alert!
The comic-book-turned-series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba follows the story of seven superpowered children: Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben and Vanya. Under mysterious circumstances, they were all born on the same day in 1989 and adopted by billionaire Reginald Hargreeves.
Growing up as "siblings," the kids were trained to become a crime-fighting force known as the Umbrella Academy. Despite being an unstoppable team, their complicated upbringing eventually causes behavioral issues to manifest, resulting in their disbandment. The six surviving members gather once more upon the death of their adoptive father. Unfortunately, they aren't as united as they once were.
Dealing with old scars and their inner demons, things take a turn for the worst when their lost sibling, Number Five, brings a message from the future. Number Five claims that the world is going to end in five days and that the Hargreeves siblings are the only ones who can stop it.
The key to preventing the Apocalypse? Catch Leonard Peabody A.K.A. Harold Jenkins, the vindictive ex-convict seeking to destroy the Umbrella Academy for rejecting him as a child. Leonard finds his opening in Vanya. He exploits her already damaged relationship with her siblings and turns her against them.
By the time the siblings find out, it’s too late. Allison attempts to bring Vanya back, only to be critically injured by Vanya's resurfacing powers. Viewing her as a serious threat, Luther locks Vanya up in a soundproof chamber. But, in a fit of rage, she destroys the Umbrella Academy mansion, killing Pogo and Grace.
In the season one finale, we see Vanya unleash her hidden powers and trigger the Apocalypse. Channeling years of resentment, she plays her violin and launches destructive energy blasts. A devastating beam hits the moon, causing moon rocks to crash down on earth. The last scene shows us the Hargreeves family traveling back in time to stop the Apocalypse.
What We Can Expect from Season Two
Like any other comic book adaptation, The Umbrella Academy tends to veer away from the original story. The most significant difference between the comic Apocalypse Suite and Netflix series is that they fail to stop the Apocalypse in the series. Given this, viewers can expect season two to follow suit and not follow the source material and head towards a direction of its own.
What We Know So Far
The show will premiere on July 31. With executive producer Steve Blackman running the show, you should expect nothing but more twists and turns to come your way.
As stated in our previous Umbrella Academy article, most of the main cast will likely return. Given that the siblings will be traveling back in time, we may witness the return of dead characters like Reginald Hargreeves. While nothing is confirmed yet, at the very least, this means you'll be getting a lot more of Aidan Gallagher and Robert Sheehan.
Expect more important announcements to come your way. Back in September, the show's official Twitter account said that "new friends" are coming. With the release date getting closer, there will surely be other big reveals to come.
