You’ve heard of the fashion brand (Nasty Gal, just in case you haven’t) checked their saucy feed on IG and have likely read the unputdownable bestseller #Girlboss. Sophia Amuroso, a.k.a #girlboss, is the epitome of a new generation of women—bold, brave and unapologetically badass. Her story begins right after she drops out of uni and goes on to work odd jobs, including assembling a sandwich at Subway. It wasn’t pretty; her life pre-Nasty Gal involved a lot of dumpster diving, petty thievery and bad decisions. But as her true-to-life experiences prove, it’s okay. Chalk it up to experience, learn from your mistakes and girl, take charge of your life! Here are tips we learned from the boss herself.
Strive for excellence.
As with any job, creative or corporate, attention to detail is e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Pay attention to the quality of work you do because excellent quality trumps quantity all the time. “Nasty Gal would have surely failed had it been my goal to grow a business to the size that I have today,” wrote Amuroso in her book. Besides, it’s the smallest detail and level of passion you have that make all the difference.
Set boundaries at work.
It’s nice to go out with co-workers or your boss for drinks, but always remember your boundaries, whether you’re the CEO or a junior manager. “Your boss is not your friend, and if you’re the boss, your employees aren’t your friends,” said Amuroso. Don’t get too comfy with the boss or binge-drink at a work event; be fun but keep it professional.
Work/life balance.
This is always easier said than done, we know. But take note that balance is different for everybody; we know some people who can produce high quality work in four hours and call it a day, while others take a little longer. The point is, get the work done and shut off. Have some respect for your own time and stop responding to calls or emails at the end of the day. You’re not a doctor. You’re not on call. That email can wait.
“Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.”
Splurge here and there; give yourself little rewards for a job well done. But remember that no big-ticket designer item can reward you better than having the financial ability to buy your own house, pay your own bills or send your future kids to school. In #Girlboss, Amuroso constantly reminds readers that money management is paramount to financial freedom.
