Upgrade Your Mom Skills With These Shows

We can all use a little help sometimes

No matter what kind of mom you are—stay-at-home, career-oriented, step or biological—the world is going to find some way to pick at your skills and methods. And while you should always stick to what you think is right for you and your child, it never hurts to gain a little wisdom from other women.

The Crown

Get some inspiration from one of the most powerful and inspiring women of our time.

There is no living female icon quite like Queen Elizabeth II and it is empowering to watch her life unfold. The Crown depicts her life from her wedding in 1947 to present day. The first season covers the events leading up to 1955 and shows how the queen was in the early days of her reign.

Watch out for the second season, which will discuss the Suez Crisis until the retirement of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. It is expected for release in November.

GLOW

Learn about the importance of a having a support system.

GLOW (The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) is one of Netflix’s newest series. It follows the lives of the 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit. Follow the fictionalized lives of these women as they fight for their right to be in the ring as more than just people to ogle at. More importantly, get a sense of how important it is to be part of a system—because no one, not even a woman, can be an island.

Audrie & Daisy

Take cues on how to handle sensitive topics and issues

This Netflix documentary touches on a very sensitive topic. It discusses three rape cases, two of which were from then-15-year-old Audrie Pott and then-14-year-old Daisy Coleman. After the cases were made public, the Pott and Coleman families were subject to abuse and cyberbullying. The documentary follows everything that happened after the assaults, including how the families handled the situations and how the girls ultimately got through trying times.

Gilmore Girls

For a little how-do-I-be-friends-with-my-kids

There is arguably no mother-daughter duo as dynamic and honest as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. It’s almost as if they’re friends first and family second with the way that they speak to and open up with each other. Follow their lives and get into their stories of success, failure, love and loss.

Iris

To relearn that there is never an excuse not to look your best

With age comes wisdom and this is proven by Albert Maysles’ documentary on Iris Apfel. The interior designer and fashion icon has not slowed down and she has a few things to teach us all. Basically, she touches on everything from style, design, plastic surgery and her personal clothing and jewelry collections.

At the end of the day, it’s all about doing what you think is best. But when you’re feeling down, there’s no harm in seeking some direction.
