7 Places To Buy Vinyl Records In Manila

These LP Shops prove that music transcends generations

The nostalgia trip has reached its fever pitch and some people have come to realize that some things are better done old school. Online music streaming sites may be the trend nowadays, but the simple joys of busting out the old phonograph (AKA turntable) and popping in Long Play vinyl are slowly creeping into mainstream consciousness.

These vinyl shops in the metro will convince you to dive into that classic feel with its persuasive charm.

When one of the country’s biggest audiophiles helps a vinyl store, you can only expect the best. Toti Dalmacion of Terno Recordings has new wave, indie rock, and some dance and electronic tracks.

That said, don’t be fooled by the store’s name, as you won’t find mainstream pop vinyl here. If you’re a fan of his label’s talents, expect to revel in the finds of Up Dharma Down, Radioactive Sago Project and Maude albums.

Northwest Estate and Collectibles

170 K-1stSt, Quezon City

Experience the thrill of rummaging through bins and bins of uncategorized LPs to find “the one.” Owner Jong Canimo believes that discovering a treasure amongst his collection of 20,000 records is what brings people back to NEC.

The collection consists of used or second-hand records by international artists. However, books, magazines, toys and even comic books also await.

The prices, by the way, go for as low as P250—and even then you can ask for a discount.

Treskul Records & Café

Knock on their unsuspecting door and someone will open up and lead you to Tres Kuleros’ living room-slash-store full of records and stereo equipment. Be greeted by stacks of vinyl that include OPM and hip-hop, as well as turntables and finds like CDs and cassette tapes.

Aside from the inexpensive LPs, do try the bar inside and chill while listening to great music.

Nocturnal Records

Claro M. Recto Avenue, Manila

Obscure finds of the hard or metal rock kind abound in Nocturnal Records located in an equally obscure corner in CM Recto. The owner, Sonny, carries both CDs and vinyl from bands like Mastodon, Nightwish, God Dethroned, Children of Bodom and Slayer.

But if you’re on the hunt for underground acts, expect records from Gorguts, Dark Angel, Amorphis, vio-Lence, Katatonia, Demolition Hammer, Pestilence and Candlemass as well.

Vinyl DUMP Thrift Store

Cubao Expo, Araneta Center, Quezon City

Art thrives in Cubao X, so it’s no surprise that it hosted the Kagatan Vinyl Swap Meet, a quarterly get-together where collectors could buy, sell or trade LPs. Nowadays though, it houses Vinyl DUMP, a records paradise where visitors get down and dirty to dig through crate after crate of vinyl.

There are bargain finds here for P350, but if you see something more valuable like Anak Bayan’s debut album, expect to shell out about P500.

Yesteryear’s Music Gallery and Vinyl Store

87 Maginhawa corner Magiting Streets, UP Village, Quezon City

An institution among UP Village residents, Nestor Vera-Cruz’s nook is identifiable only by an obscure sign. Inside is his massive collection of records, which he started on in 1998—although some go for as far back as a hundred years—as well as cassette tapes, portraits and sculptures.

Satchmi

Branches in 4F Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall and 2F Cinema Building, UP Town Center

Perhaps the store that brought the mainstream interest in vinyl back, Satchmi carries both new and remastered records of different genres, from classic blues to modern rock. They recently made an album in collaboration with local radio station Jam 88.3 called “Fresh Filter,” featuring Pinoy bands.

You can try out the records in their listening room or have drinks at their in-house café. For those seeking a turntable, Satchmi also carries Motorino, a portable and rechargeable turntable.
