Whatever Happened To The Anime Series Bleach

It’s coming back—kind of

More than a decade ago, Bleach hit television screens and stayed until its completion in 2012. The series was based off Tite Kubo’s manga of the same name, but the show’s ending was a little controversial. To put it mildly, audiences were a little hurt, disappointed and practically screamed for something different.

What is it about?

Bleach follows the journey of Ichigo Kurosaki after he discovers he has the powers of a Soul Reaper, which is death personified. His new role forces him to defend humans from evil spirts and guiding the dead to the afterlife.

How did it end?

After 366 episodes, the anime series came to a close (although the manga itself survived for a few more years). Some say that the fall of the show began once the pacing slowed down. It arguably got too convoluted and the defeat of Sousuke Aizen pretty much spelled the natural death for Bleach. Not to mention, when the show ended, a significant percent of audiences were less-than-thrilled about who Ichigo ended up with. What can we say, we take our ships seriously.

So while Bleach had momentum and gained its fair share of followers (debates rampaged online about the best anime series between Naruto, One Piece and Bleach), it didn’t have enough power to keep succeeding. Nevertheless, it is getting a shot at redemption.

Is there more?

After months of teasing, a trailer for the live-action movie of Bleach finally made its way online. The trailer isn’t that long, but we do get a glimpse of Ichigo fending off some spirits with his Zanpakuto soul cutter sword. For the Bleach-fluent, this means something. Throughout his adventures, Ichigo wields several swords, but Zanpakuto is his very first.

The worldwide release date for Bleach is still unknown, but it will arrive in Japan sometime next year.
