“Whether The Weather Is Fine” Wins at the 74th Locarno Film Festival

The film’s smashing debut includes a special award

Filipino talent continues to make waves locally and internationally in 2021, bringing in more pride and awards home. This time around, exceptional local talent manifests in Kun Naupay Man It Panahon (Whether The Weather is Fine). It’s a joint project among local studios such as Globe Studios, Black Sheep, iWant and Dreamscape, and multiple international film studios. Carlo Francisco Manatad, also known for his film editing work in Pamilya Ordinaryo (Ordinary People), is the movie director.

The film made its world premiere at the 74th edition of the Locarno Film Festival held in Locarno, Switzerland, from August 4 to 14, 2021. After a smashing debut, the movie also won a special award. “Kun Naupay Man It Panahon (Whether The Weather Is Fine) bags the Cinema e Gioventù Prize from the Concorso Cineasti del presente Junior Jury at the 74th Locarno Film Festival,” Globe Studios tweets. “Grazie mille!”

Locarno Film Festival’s Cinema e Gioventù Prize is an educational initiative aimed at students aged 18 to 21. Among these participants are the designated youth juries in evaluating the official films competing in the festival. In addition, the Concorso Cineasti del presente category features titles directed by “emerging global talents.” If anything, the award makes this film a lot more exciting to see once we get further word on its local release.

Whether The Weather Is Fine follows Miguel (Daniel Padilla), Norma (Charo Santos-Concio) and Andrea (Rans Rifol) as they navigate the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Tacloban city. As another storm approaches, Miguel is determined to flee to Metro Manila and searches for his mother, Norma, and his girlfriend, Andrea. The film is about the trio’s journey filled with hope and struggles of survival.

The movie is also part of the Official Selection of the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival from September 9 to 18, 2021. Here’s to hoping that Whether The Weather Is Fine manages to bag more awards and move more audiences.
