Who Are the Birds of Prey? Here’s a Primer on Harley Quinn’s New Team

Get to know the members of DC’s new all-female superhero team

The success of Suicide Squad in 2016 established Harley Quinn as a fan favorite, stealing the hearts of both fans of the comic and the anti-superhero movie. As luck would have it, this is just the beginning for Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe (or the DCEU). This month, she’s set to return to the big screen—with a squad of her own, too.

If you’re a die-hard fan of the DC Universe, we’re sure the Birds of Prey are no strangers to you. For casual fans, they may not strike a chord. But even if they aren’t nearly as popular as the Justice League or perhaps the Bat-Family, DCEU fans have plenty to be excited about when it comes to the upcoming film release.

To help the unfamiliar get on board quicker, we’ve prepared a short guide to the Birds of Prey (plus, what you can expect from the movie). Scroll through and get reading before heading to the cinemas!

Who are the Birds of Prey?

The Birds of Prey is an all-female superhero team consisting of Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress and Detective Renee Montoya. The movie, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, is set after the events that took place in Suicide Squad and follows Harley Quinn as the main protagonist.

After her breakup with the Joker, Harley bands her own group of unlikely superheroes together to protect a young girl named Cassandra Cain from the Black Mask. No official details regarding the heroes and plot have been released, but judging by the trailer, the new film is expected to break from comic book resources in more ways than one.

Meet the Birds of Prey:

Harley Quinn

Before Harleen Quinzel became everyone’s favorite villainess, she was once a gymnast-turned-psychiatrist. As a staff member in Arkham Asylum, she found herself assigned to the then-mental patient the Joker and falling madly in love with him. After breaking him free, the two became partners-in-crime and wreaked havoc upon Gotham.

Other than being equipped superhuman strength and agility (as seen in Suicide Squad), she’s also one of the smartest villains in comic book history and has constantly kept Batman on his toes. Following a superb portrayal in her first big-screen appearance as Harley Quinn, it goes without saying that we can expect Margot Robbie to deliver another blockbuster performance.

Black Canary

Dinah Lance (aka Black Canary) is arguably the most complex member among the Birds of Prey.

Known to be one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the DC Universe, what sets her apart from other similar characters is her supersonic voice. The film trailer even teases her “Canary Cry,” a superpower that can shatter glass and even a person’s eardrums.

With a rich origin story that extends to alternate universes and dimensions, it will be interesting to see how Jurnee Smollet-Bell portrays her in the film.

The Huntress

Huntress, also known as Helena Bertinelli, was born into one of the most esteemed families in Sicily. After migrating to Gotham, her family immediately gained notoriety as one of the most powerful mobsters in the city. It is here where Helena’s family is massacred.

Following the tragedy, Helena is sent back to Sicily under the care of her aunt and uncle. During her stay with the Panessa family, she comes to notice that her cousins were often training with weapons of all sorts. Fueled by vengeance, she develops an interest in weaponry and eventually develops herself into an excellent marksman.

Paired with proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and gymnastics, Helena (set to be played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) becomes the Huntress, one of the most dangerous members of the Birds of Prey.

Detective Renee Montoya

Detective Renee Montoya is one of the aces of Gotham’s police department. After serving the Major Crimes unit, she eventually leaves the force due to corruption in the office.

Deciding whether or not to take matters into her own hands, she assumes the mantle of the Question to counter crime at her own terms. Judging from the teasers released, Rosie Perez isn’t likely to portray Montoya’s identity as the Question. We can expect a unique take of the character upon the movie’s release.

The Orphan

Cassandra is a runaway who stumbles upon Gotham City. In the comic book, she later becomes a member of the Bat-family.

However in the Birds of Prey movie, the Orphan is expected to deviate the most from her origin story. Hopefully, we’ll get a performance unlike any other from Ella Jay Basco.
