You can never be too safe

Water and food
This is a no-brainer, but you still have to be smart about it. Pack enough water for a couple of days and pack food that won’t spoil quickly but will fill you up fast. This might sound extreme for a few people, but you really never know how big the disaster will be and how long its effects will last.
A radio
In really bad cases, a radio might be your only source of information. You’ll be safe with a battery powered one, but do pack a crank-powered radio if you can get your hands on it. You’ll have to put some elbow grease into it once in a while, but it would theoretically last you longer.
