Easy at Home Games You Can Play with Your Kids During Quarantine

A little bit of creativity goes a long way

With yesterday’s temperature reaching upwards of 40 degrees, there’s no question that we’re right smack in the middle of summer—and still under lockdown. For the kids, summer usually means time away from home and picking up an activity or two (think swimming lessons or soccer), but times have changed. And as every parent knows, it’s hard to keep a child entertained in the home.

But here’s the thing: Sometimes you just need to get creative and muster up a little bit more energy to keep redundancy at bay. Below, a few suggestions on what to do with your kids:

Quiz Night: Kids Edition

If you’re the type of adult (or guardian) that likes to randomly ask questions to the younger individuals of your household, then why not turn it into a night to remember? Throw in some questions that are age appropriate, whether about something they learned in school or a movie that they’ve watched a few times. It’s a great way to keep everyone #SafeAtHome and engaged while keeping the brain exercised.

You can make it simple and just have everyone sit around the room while you ask and they answer, or you can go all out and make a presentation, connect it to your TV and have some fun competition before bedtime.

Make & Solve Your Own Puzzle

Puzzles are a great way to pass the time, but the more traditional ones might get boring for children—especially if they’ve done them before. To get them more into the activity, have them draw their own picture on a hard piece of paper (think the blank part of a cereal box or even construction paper). When they’re done coloring everything in, cut their drawings and have them piece their artwork back together.

Complete The Lyrics

If you don’t mind some noise, a game of complete the lyrics can be a lot of fun. Just prepare a playlist on YouTube (preferably a lyric video) and pause the song in one or two parts with participants getting a change to sing the next line in round-robin style. Bonus points if they dance!

Treasure Hunt

A treasure hunt takes a little bit more effort to put together, but it will definitely keep the kids busy for a while (and maybe without your supervision). Leave at least ten clues around your home that lead to the other, with the last leading to a treasure of some sort. While most people limit the clues to rooms in the home, you can get more specific (and more mysterious) by using the clues to lead to certain items around the house. Don’t worry, the end doesn’t have to be a big reveal; it can be their favorite snack waiting for them it the afternoon, a fort to play in or even a family-beloved movie that they can enjoy.

Build & Run An Obstacle Course

For the active children, you can also set up an obstacle course at home. We’re not exactly talking monkey bars over here (unless you already have those). Opt to have your kids jump on to-be-washed pillow cases, jump over your couch, climb your chairs and go through a wall covered with yarn. And if you have the outdoor space, literally throw in some water balloons while the players are mid-obstacles.

We may all still be on lockdown, but our imagination doesn’t need to be stifled. It’s summer and we’re all home; it’s time to have a little bit of fun!
