4 Trends You Can Totally Wear From NYFW And Other Things You Need To Know

Fashion month has officially begun!

September is a month most holy for fashion. It is the time when the rest of the world gets a quick recap of what’s going on today—be it in arts, culture or politics—as well as gets a peek into the near future through beautifully, sometimes, bizarrely designed clothes and accessories. But often times, it’s when the fashion-obsessed can simply sit back and ogle at what dozens of designers have to offer for the next season.

And as New York Fashion Week wrapped just last Wednesday and with another one—LFW—underway, trendspotting can be a dizzying task. Here, we pick out the best trends you can wear in Manila and where to get some of them as early as now!

COLOR ME BRAVE

The biggest trend at NYFW? Color. We don’t mean modest pastels but a starburst of colors. Take your pick from school bus yellow to bright orange and 80s-ish pink with inspo courtesy of Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford. Feeling brave? Wear pink and red or other bright and bold combinations.

SHOW ME SOME SKIN

Summer? Two words: bra top. The underwear as outerwear trend returns and it’s more daring than ever many thanks to Helmut Lang’s Shayne Oliver. But to keep it slightly within the norm (we are still a conservative culture after all), take a page from Tom Ford’s sexy but respectable lewks: bra tops under strong-shouldered jackets.

RETURN OF THE THROWBACK

Everything 90s resurfaced in the recent past and it’s not going anywhere in 2018. Think low-slung pants, bodysuits, boxy/oversized jackets (picks below!) as well as the usuals, like denim and plaid. What else was 90s about NYFW? 90s super Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber model making her runway debut for Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs no less.

RISE OF WOMEN NOW

Many reviews of the recent shows have said that feminism and politics are common themes at NYFW. Most obvious would be retailer Alice + Olivia’s feminist wall and Super Woman clutch and Calvin Klein designer Raf Simmon’s take on the American dream x American horror-inspired collection. What’s the actual trend? We say clothes that allow you to embrace your individuality and make you feel empowered.

NYFW also celebrated diversity—another recurring theme—by way of plus-sized collections and supermodels like Ashley Graham walking for Prabal Gurung and Michael Kors and giving new designers, like Mexican-born Victor Barragan, a moment in the sun.
