Fuel Your Fire: Next Gen Women Redefining Boundaries in Music, Esports, and Sports Because #SheCan
In this article:
Gone are the days when women just stayed on the sidelines, stereotypes were unchallenged, and most industries were seen as exclusive men’s clubs. A new era has arrived, where young women are shattering glass ceilings, rewriting traditional narratives, and reshaping industries with their raw passion and authenticity.
With Globe by their side, next-generation women like the feisty members of the Pinoy pop group BINI, gaming and esports maverick Denise Oyog, and young tennis sensation Alex Eala have become forces to be reckoned with in their respective fields—from the cutthroat world of sports to the competitive culture of online gaming, and vibrant music business.
They knew what they wanted. They stood their ground. And these extraordinary women continue to prove that #SheCan; and inspire future generations of girls to follow in their footsteps.
BINI: Slaying the P-Pop Scene with Anthems of Empowerment
Dubbed by their growing fandom as the Nation’s Girl Group, BINI, with their infectious and ear-candy hits coupled with their distinct personalities and charisma, has proven that bubblegum pop is a legitimate genre worth listening to and put Pinoy pop on the global map.
Since their debut in 2021 and with the unwavering support of Globe, the all-girl P-pop powerhouse composed of Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoana, and Sheena, has been dishing out anthems for empowerment with a clear message that girls can achieve their dreams by being fearless and embracing their true selves.
In 2022, the prestigious music magazine Rolling Stone even named them as one of the rising international artists under the Spotify RADAR program. Fast forward to this year, they’ve become the P-pop act with the largest following on Spotify, with 1.4 million monthly listeners.
Solidifying further their status as P-pop royalty, the group recently received the prestigious Rising Star award at the Billboard Philippines’ Women in Music Awards.
“Our advocacy is women empowerment. We always want to inspire women and we want to make sure that they are confident in their own skin,” the group said as they released their latest mini album on International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024.
Denise Oyog: Breaking Barriers for Esports Inclusivity
Fueled by her mantra that gender should never limit one’s passion, Denise Oyog is on a mission to pave the way for more women in the historically male-dominated pro-gaming scene as one of the game-changing leaders in the esports industry.
Speaking at the She Talks Asia Summit 2024, Denise, Head of IPs and Events at the TEG Group of Companies, shared her journey of embracing her true self and freeing herself from societal expectations that kept her from pursuing her love for esports.
She grew up in a household that was very supportive of her zeal for gaming. “In fact, it became a reward system…an incentive for us to do well in school,” she said. This nurturing environment only made her dedication for gaming even stronger.
But her passion had to take a backseat when she entered the corporate world. “My authentic self had to take a step back because there were many other expectations and demands of the job,” she added. But after a decade of compartmentalizing, she finally decided enough was enough.
She left her old job and took her chance at esports, where she finally found her “tribe.” In her relentless pursuit of equality within the industry, she’s happy to note that teams and organizations are signing more women to their rosters—at least 60% are now filled with female talents.
“We’re trying to create safer spaces and opening up more opportunities for them because gaming is really a passion point and passion points know no gender,” she said.
Alex Eala: A Trailblazer on the Tennis Court and Beyond
On the tennis court, teen phenom Alex Eala is a next-gen barrier breaker, proving with her grit and talent that gender and age are no obstacles to success in sports. At only 18 and with a string of impressive feats that thrust the Philippines onto the tennis international circuit, Alex is inspiring a new breed of Filipino athletes to dream big and chase their dreams fearlessly.
Her winning streak that marked many firsts for the Philippines began in 2020 when she clinched the Australian Open Junior Girls’ Doubles title. After that, she won her second Grand Slam title in the 2021 French Open juniors doubles tournament and her first junior singles title at the 2022 US Open.
Showing no signs of slowing down, Alex continues to rapidly ascend in the global rankings—recently setting a new career-best Women's Tennis Association ranking of World No. 180. She recently won her second doubles title this year at the W75 Croissy-Beaubourg tournament in France together with her French partner, Estelle Cascino. This marks a strong start for 2024 despite early setbacks at the Miami Open, proving Alex’s commitment and tenacity for the sport.
Her extraordinary milestones and her unwavering dedication to her studies as a Rafa Nadal Academy scholar have earned her rights to become a Globe Gen G Ambassador and extend her influence beyond the tennis court.
As a Globe ambassador, she leads a movement of Gen Zs who courageously power through challenges and limitations with their innovative spirit and resilience to thrive in their passions.
“Like any other youth, I am taking every chance to take on the world and seize every opportunity, no matter if it is a hit or miss. I remind myself every day to just go and get it. And I know that other young Filipinos like me can also do the same,” she said.
With their empowering stories of determination and authenticity, these next-gen women are showing the world that gender barriers are meant to be shattered, not accepted. And with Globe, which has always been at the forefront of providing Gen Zs a platform to pursue their dreams, BINI, Denise, and Alex continue to redefine what it means to be a woman today, inspiring others to succeed and believe that indeed, #SheCan!
