Get Buff, Not Broke. The Basics To Your Very Own Home Gym

Because the fit life is within reach

After seeing the new and improved Raymond Gutierrez, many of us wanted to get on the fitness track yet again. The host and TV personality, who lost the extra weight through intense workouts and cutting out—gasp!—alcohol, beef, pork, pizza and rice in his diet, reveals in an interview with ABS-CBN News that getting fit is a serious commitment. It is after all “100% in the mind.” So, no more excuses!

Traffic going to the gym is bad? Don’t have the budget for a pay-per-session class? Then set up your own gym at home.

Why?

For one, it’s cleaner so no more sweaty exercise machines plus you get to use your own shower. It’s convenient, too, so you can hit the gym right when you wake up or get home from work. Last but not least, no monthly fees! You only spend for the equipment you actually need.

Is it for you?

Be honest. Training or working out alone is not for everyone. If you’re a social butterfly and like to exercise with a group then a home gym might not be for you.

First things first.

Once you decide to transform a space your home into a gym, know that there are a few things to consider:

Space—knowing how much space you have will help manage your expectations of how much you can work with and well, work out in.

Budget—the stuff you need will depend on the kind of routine you have or will have. Don’t blow your money on fancy equipment; you’re starting out, not training for the Olympics. Also, if you’re working with a small budget, know that there’s no shame in buying used equipment. But if you can shell out a few thousands, check out Lazada for great deals.

Atmosphere—tailor your space to your personality and fill the walls with fitspirational images and quotes. This will help keep you motivated, especially on days when you just don’t feel like working out.

Now, the basics.

Barbell and plate set—Essential. You’ll need them to work out your legs, back, shoulders, chest, arms—everything. But remember to carry only what feels comfortable or you could hurt yourself.

Bench—to make the most out of your barbell sets (and those sit ups), you’ll need a bench. Choose one that incline and decline functionality. Trust us, it’ll come in handy.

Flooring—rubber puzzle mats protect you and your gym equipment. Small space? Consider a yoga mat.

Kettlebells—many serious fitness enthusiasts opt for kettlebells (12-16kg) over a rack of dumbbells as it offers hundred of workout variations without using up that much space.

That’s it! Looking for cardio equipment? Go outside and hit the pavement or do HIIT indoors. Good luck!
