FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Schedule and Format

This year’s World Cup takes place in Doha, Qatar, from November 20 to December 18. 2022 marks the first time the event is held in the Middle East, making this event a historical milestone.


Hosting 64 matches in 28 days, this year’s run is the shortest tournament held since 1978. The games are spread over six stages, beginning with a 32-team group stage that is eventually trimmed down to 16. Only the top two teams from the eight groups are slated to proceed to the knockout stages: Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Third-place match, and Finals.


  • Group stage: November 20–December 2  

  • Round of 16: December 3–6   

  • Quarterfinals: December 9–10

  • Semifinals: December 13–14

  • Third-place match: December 17

  • Finals: December 18   


During the group stage, four daily matches are spread over different parts of the day. The only overlapping matches are expected on the final day of the group stage. Taking different time zones into consideration, here's a list of the kickoff times for the 2022 World Cup:

FIFA World Cup 2022 Venue and Groupings

Qatar’s World Cup is hosted across various stadiums all over Doha. The venues are within 35 to 46 miles of one another, which doesn’t just make traveling convenient, but also allows fans to watch more games. The venues for the games are as follows:

As for the participants, 32 teams divided into eight groups are lined up for the 2022 World Cup. This is also the last tournament with 32 teams playing, as the 2026 World Cup will increase the lineup to an astounding 48. Here are the official groups for the 2022 World Cup:
