A Look At Floyd Mayweather, Boxing’s Money-Making Pretty Boy
Plus his upcoming fight with Conor McGregor
Floyd “Money” Mayweather is arguably one of boxing’s most infamous superstars. Despite his lavish lifestyle and his innate need to show it off, fans of the sport love to watch him play. He is incredibly smart with his moves, a necessity that is only heightened by his talent.
In August, Mayweather is going up against UFC fighter Conor McGregor in the boxing ring.
The technicalities
Mayweather is 40-years-old, stands 5’8’’ and has a reach of 72 inches. In all aspects, Conor has an advantage as the 29-year-old is 5’9’’ and has a reach of 74 inches. But numbers aside, Mayweather definitely has history on his side.
A quick review
In 1996, Mayweather beat Mexican Roberto Apodaca and so began his stella boxing career at the age 19. Since then, the American has been left undefeated in the ring, beating out even the likes of Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya and our own Manny Pacquiao.
His fighting style
Money would not have gotten as far as he has if not for his defensive ability. He’s highly regarded as the greatest defensive boxer of all time—and this is also why he was nicknamed Pretty Boy at the start of his career; he hardly had any scars to prove his time in the ring.
Mayweather has not knocked down an opponent since his Victor Ortiz in 2011 and the fighter has relied very heavily on defense. And while his power should not be underestimated, McGregor has never been knocked out in the octagon. It will be interesting to see how these two aspects play out.
In the ring with Conor McGregor
There’s no doubt about it; Mayweather is the overwhelming favorite to win in his fight against McGregor next month. The Irishman may have cemented his name inside the octagon, but entering the battlefield of Mayweather may have been a mistake. The style and rules are different in each ring and while Mayweather’s instincts are tuned to it, McGregor’s reflexes are not.
It’s likely that Mayweather will lean on his defensive technique in August, while McGregor rains down on powerful punches. It will all come down to whether or not Money can dodge the jabs and if the Notorious Conor McGregor can keep up.
The Mayweather vs. McGregor fight is scheduled for August 26.
