Our PH Bets At The 2017 SEA Games
We’re going for the gold!
When it comes to international athletics, many might argue that Filipinos are at a slight disadvantage. As a general rule, we just aren’t built for certain kinds of sports. It’s also no secret that we don’t have the best facilities. But what we do have is heart and dedication. And our athletes for the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur have no shortage in this area.
1) Luis Gabriel Moreno (Archery)
After winning the country’s first ever medal in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics when he teamed up with China’s Li Jiaman to win in the international team event, Luis Gabriel Moreno has proven himself on the international stage.
There’s no doubt that he will be bringing the same level of talent and perseverance at the 2017 SEA Games.
2) Eric Cray (Athletics)
Eric Cray already made the country proud with his performance at the last Rio Olympics. He also shone in Singapore when he dominated the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdles, even setting a new record in the latter event.
One of Southeast Asia’s fastest men is a definite favorite coming into Kuala Lumpur.
3) Rubilen Amit (Billiards)
This will be the seventh time that Rubilen Amit participates in the biennial tournament. She had previously won five golds in the SEA Games, so she is familiar to the event and this one is likely to be in her favor.
Her participation in the women’s nine-ball singles this year is sure to be an exciting one to watch.

4) Mary Joy Tabal (Marathon)
While her career was a little controversial after initially being excluded from Team Philippines for allegedly failing to follow the rules of the federation, there is no question about Mary Joy Tabal’s actual talent. She was the first Pinay marathoner to compete in the Summer Olympics, won silver in the SEA Games in Singapore and represented the Philippines in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Here’s to hoping she’ll take home another medal.
5) EJ Obiena (Pole Vaulting)
To completely develop his talent, EJ Obiena has been training in Italy on a scholarship with the International Athletics Federation. His personal best at this point is 5.55 meters, but he has his eye on breaking the Olympic qualifying mark of 5.70 meters.
He has so much potential that we’re sure to see come to life at the SEA Games.
6) Aries Toledo (Decathlete)
Hailing from Nueva Ecija is Aries Toledo, who surpassed the silver-medal output in 2016. National coach Jojo Posadas has high expectations for the decathlete in his upcoming events.
Things are likely to go in his favor as the last gold medalist in decathlon has retired.

7) Globe PH Volcanoes (Rugby)
The Globe Philippine Volcanoes are no strangers to the SEA Games stage. They already have a gold shining brightly on their resume, but the team has not let this get to their heads. The training that they have gone through is no joke and each member puts in the same level of dedication as the next.
The team is definitely looking to top their previous medal-winning performance.
In total, there are over 500 Pinoy athletes that are making their way to the SEA Games, which kick off today. We’re praying for you, ladies and gents!
