Meet Philippine Volleyball’s Rising Stars

Watch out for their names

We may be known around the world as a basketball-loving nation, but volleyball is another sport that is quickly gaining attention. It once was a sport that was appreciated by just a small percentage, but it is now one of the more popular things to watch and stay updated on.

Kim Kianna Dy

A member of De La Salle University’s Lady Spikers, Kim Kianna Dy is a staple in Philippine collegiate volleyball. But while fans appreciate her skill and talent on the court, the attention was well deserved way before then.

Before Kianna stepped in as a Lady Spiker for DLSU, she wore proudly wore the banner of De La Salle Zobel. In season 72 of the UAAP girls division, she was awarded MVP. In season 74 and 75, she was named as the best blocker. She won three straight championships in seasons 73, 74 and 75. In the NCR Team for Palarong Pamabansa in 2012, she helped her team win the regional championship.

While with DLSU, Kianna helped win back-to-back championships for the Lady Spikers. But despite her awards and championships, we know there’s no way but up for her.

Rex Intal

While his volleyball beginnings were not as hyped and colorful as Kianna’s, Rex Intal is now a multi-awarded player. He’s gone on the record to say that what he once never even considered playing is now something he attributes to changing his life.

Intal started playing for Ateneo’s men high school volleyball team when he was a junior. He admits that his team then was at the bottom of the league—a status that did not change during his senior year. But it was this frustration and drive to play in the Final Four that sparked a light in Intal when he began playing for ADMU.

During his rookie year, ADMU was still ranking at the bottom half of the league. But with a never-say-never attitude, hard work and dedication, ADMU eventually won a three-peat championship. Intal is thankful and we’re eager to see where the court will take him.
